MARTIN OF TOURS - CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE OF CANADA The regular monthly meeting of St. Martins C.W.L. was held on February 13, 1979 in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Edna Ramsey will be the nomination convenor for the new executive which will be coming into office in the next few months. The report on the success of the Valentine tea was presented by Mrs. Belliveau, the profits of which will be given to the McCausland Hospital Building Fund. The First Friday Devotions were discussed and we are all asked to put more effort into attending the devotions at this very important time of prayer for Vocations. Members were asked to continue to save the Canada Packers labels. 01d business included the arrival of our new gavel. Knitting projects are well on the way. Baby wool is now available if anyone wishes to knit with this. These articles are to be sold at the annual Penny Auction in the Fall. New Business included a letter from Bishop John 0'Mara concerning us all with the "Year Of The Child" A letter from Mary Dashkewytch who is the "Resolutions Convenor" at the Diocesan Tevel was read an we were very interested with all the resolutions which are presented. World Day of Prayer will be hosted by the Penicostal Ladies on March 3rd in 'the Commu:ity Church. The two readers from our Church will be Mrs. L. Belliveau and Mrs. C. Haas. They will be presenting the service for the residents of Birchwood Terrace at the Home at 1:15 p.m. on March 2nd. Our Council will send 10% of our yearly profits to the Peace and Development Fund. We will be hosting the Birchwood Terrace Project in April. Members are asked to bring us their ideas about entertainment for this occasion. The sacrement of Confirmation will be administered in our Parish on April 28, 1979, The convenors for this event will be Mrs. F. Luke and Mrs, E. Falzetta. Fern will be placing an arder for religious articles, if anyone wishes to order something please contact her as soon as possible. Reservations have been made for members who wish to attend the convention in Sioux Lookout on May 9, Following the closing prayers Mrs. Pam Jones presented a beautiful song and prayer for the Year Of . The Child, She sang the song "Reach Out In Love" which was indeed a pleasure to listen to. We thank her with all our hearts. NORTH SUPERIOR SKI CHALLENGE ' 79 Revenu Canada : Impét ; Not since the 1930's when men mined gold from the depths of Mr. Gwynn, has Schreiber Point witnessed Lion Atiiony C. Abbott ; such a flurry of activity as generated by the North Superior Ski Challenge. This ski event attracted thirty-one entrants and presented them with a gruelling course wot high above Lake Superior. Throughout the 18 kilometers skiers embraced the essense of 1ife, by willingly BE --.. accepting a challenge and making the best of it. The winner was Lonnie Connely of Schreiber with Esko Tohkanen of Terrace Bay in second place. Both of these skiers were beyond exception. Lonnie completed the eleven mile course in one hour and forty minutes with Esko and his broken ski only three minutes behind. The first woman to cross the finish Tine was a very relaxed Cynthia Larson of Nipigon. The mainstay of the Challenge was the spirit of good will and co-operation amongst all involved. There was Lonnie Connely's show of sportsmanship in saluting the courage of fellow skier Esko Tohkanen, while Norm Norris's children and several older women proved that nothing is impossible. . Afterwards a supper prepared by the Chimo Club was held in the Schreiber High School. Lonnie and Cynthia were presented with framed 16 x 20 colour prints depicting scenes of Lake Superior. All participants were awarded T-shirts embrazened with the Voyageur Trail logo, which they will wear with a well earned sense of pride. A slide show entitled "North Superior Hiking Train" followed the presentations Esko Tohkanen summed up his feelings towards the marathon very simply, "They don't make *-ails like this in Finland". An- other skier added a more spiritual touch, "You could smell St. Peter's feet on top of that aountain®. The Voyageur Trail Club would like to thank their sponsors, Costa's and Schreiber Food Market for the donations -of food. The Bay, Macleods, Cebrario's Hardware, Western Tire and the Bank of Montreal for contributions towards the prizes. Special thanks to the Schreiber Chimo Club, and Pat Guina who kept the beams well stirred.
