NOVEMBER 29, 1978 - TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 15 SCHRE IBER-TERRACE BAY ASSOCIATION FOR THE MENTALLY RETARDED MEETING The Schreiber~Terrace Bay Association for the Mentally Retarded had a meeting on Thursday, November 9th in the home of Mrs. Kay LeBlanc, president. Several items of business were discussed, including the Regional Meeting which was held on 22-23 September in Schreiber. This meeting was well attended, and the following are some items which were brought to the attention of the delegates: There are new Ministry guidelines re the investigation of abuse of a resident in a facility; the police must now be brought in. All Associations are asked to help raise $100,000.00 as a Prevention Fund; we are urged to participate in this most worthwhile endeavour. An Ad-Hoc Committee was set up to review a name change of the Association, removing the words "Mentally Retarded" from it. Although members were eugally divided on this issue, it was decided to leave it as it is at present, the main issue really being to educate the public, and remove the stigma attached to mental retardation. Each Association put in a report of their own activities and ours noted that we have eleven children and adults in our community who are retarded. We have eight working members in our association. The ladies of our Association were thanked for providing refreshments during the two days, and all felt that the meet- ing had been a success. At our regular meeting wecalso discussed the situation which exists re school for the children from our communi ty. A meeting is being requested with Mrs. Toomey of the Lake Superior Board of Education regarding the children from Terr- ace Bay/Schreiber attending the McMorland School in Marathon. The members are concerned with the increase in boarding rates, which the parents have had to absorb. The amount allowed to the parents is to be increased retroactively, but this has not yet come through, and is proving financially difficult. If anyone would like further information on our activities or is interested in joining the Association, please contacts Mrs. Ann Johnston, 825-3811. HARLEM KINGS COMEDY BASKETBALL TEAM VS. T.S.H.S.
