PAGE 8 TERRACE BAY NEWS 1 AUGUST 10, 1978 1 Schreiber Parks and Recreation Schreiber Parks and Recreation has received word from Thunder Bay that a grant in the amount of $5,800.00 has been approved by the Ministry of Community and Social Services in Toronto and Thunder Bay, for the development of a fitness trail, This is made through the Regional Children Services Branch of this Ministry. -- The funds will be administered by the Township of Schreiber. It will be attempted to make the trail in conjunction with the guidelines of Participark. This will require the participation and support of the Schreiber Kinsmen Club, which has shown interest in the devel- opment of the facility. Work on the clearing will start by the middle of August. EXPERIENCE '78 - PROGRAM 0701: In the last week the persons taking part in the programs have taken a bike trip to Hayes Lake, participated in a variety of sports activities. While on the trip to Hayes Lake drift wood was picked up and brought back to dry, then sanded and varnished. In the next week another bike trip is planned, a possible overnite camping excursion. WILDERNESS - YOUNG CANADA WORKS: The boys and girls returned last week from their three day camping trip by canoe to the old Boy Scout Camp. There will be another overnight adventure in the near future which will involve the use of the learned skills in greater detail and depth. Plans for next: summer are being looked at now by the recreation office. Those in the basic level this summer will go to a level one and again we build on this to a point in the future the partici -pants become leaders. RECREATION SURVEY - YOUNG CANADA WORKS: The three girls doing the local recreational survey are having a very good response; with just over one hundred surveys passed out ninety-five have been received back. Information from the survey is indeed interesting and in some instances very surprising. Several persons are offering their personal opinions and views, which have added to the in- formation. Once the survey is completed all the data.will be compiled and made public. We thank all persons that have taken the time to fill out the survey; this now gives us a better pic -ture of what and where emphasis needs to be put and has to be planned. : MINOR BASEBALL: The T-Ball and Superior Divisions have finished their respec -tive seasons. The Railway league will continue in anticipa- tion of a tournament in Terrace Bay. There may be a local tournament in Schreiber on September 9, for boys 11 = 14 years. Further information as this possibliity develops. A meeting of all division coaches was held last week to discuss this year and how and where improvements can be made for 1979. With one hundred players involved this year we all are looking forward to equal or better next. year, COMMUNITY TENNIS TOURNAMENT: There is finally enough participants to run a local tennis | i { tournament for persons 11 to 14 years, which will be classif- ied as the junior level and also a senior level. The junior category will hold their tournament on August 13, 1978 and the senior on August 19th, 1978 at the Schreiber Tennis Courts. SPORTS TRAVELCADE: On September 9, 10, 11, 1978 the Sports Travelcade will be in Terrace Bay at the Lake Superior Public School. Informa- tion on a variety of sports is offered along with slides and films. Two clinics - badminton and ringette are travelling with the trailer. The ringette clinic is open to all interes- ted in playing, coaching or officiating. There is no charge for attending. WINTARIO GRANTS: Two minor leagues have received grants for the purchase of sports equipment. Schreiber Ringette received a check for $519.00 and Schreiber Minor Baseball has notification of ap- proval for $268.00. Clubs, organizations are eligible for funding from Wintario on equipment on a 50 - 50 basis. Con- tact the recreation office to see what your group is eligible for through Wintario.
