She fell victim to our treacherous local waters in ' the summer of 1911, because her owner would not pay a $15.00 fee to have her piloted to safe water. It has since been the cause of much controversy, which may unravel as early as this fall. Deep Dive Systems headed by diver Fred Broennle, has been studying the wreck for the . past seven years with the idea of ultimately bringing her to the surface. Using a highly sophisticated submarine called the"D.D.S. Constructor', Broennle and company plan to raise the mysterious vessel by sinking rail- road tank cars, lashing them to the ship and then gradually inflating them with air in order to float her to the surface. It is'believed to contain $300,000 in English China and silver, $500,000 in money and jewels as well as cases of rare wines and liquors. Her value is estimated at 2.5 mil- lion dollars. Along with the monetary re- wards, Broennle seems to have another motive which stems from a disaster in August of 1970. Upon first locating the wreck his over-anxious companion Charles King Hague lost his life diving on their newly found discovery. Gunil- da poses a personal challenge to Broennle as if he must avenge the loss of his companion. Whether or not the 196 foot beauty will ever again see the surface has long been a local topic of debate. It appears that many of these long-unanswered questions may 'soon come to light or continue to remain in the icy grip of Superior.
