MARCH 30, 1977 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 5.. LAKE TROUT STOCKING PROJECT SANTOY LAKE: Continued from page Na I Ee a The lake appears to have all the characteris- tics required to support lake trout. In 1966, when the lake was not yet accessible by all- weather road 40,000 lake trout fingerlings -* . were stocked by aircraft. Unfortunately, the flight ran into heavy rain squalls placing ex- tra holding time stress on the small trout. To date -there is no evidence that any of those stocked trout survived. Last year it was decided to .try once more. |.» On May 12, 1976 10,000 lake trout yearlings were stocked in the lake by fish tank truck and hand planting. If these trout are to reach maturity, they will require a natural deep water forage species. What is needed is a fish species that grows and reproduces rap- idly without destroying the population balan- ces in the lake. It was decided that lake herring would meet these requiremtnts and would be a good forage species for our stocked lake trout. ring as fertilized eggs to allow their entry into the food chain at a lower level than the yearling trout. Thanks to Mr. Alonzo Nuttall, a commercial fisherman from Nipigon, we were able to col- lect 1,500,000 herring eggs from Black Bay, Lake Superior on November 24, 1976. The fer- tilized eggs were planted in Santoy Lake the next day in locations that had been previously surveyed for their suitability for herring spawning. Hopefully, the eggs will hatch within 90 - 100 days from the time of stock- ing." District Fish and Wildlife staff are very interested in the results of this project. Over the next few years they would like to hear from any anglers who are successful in catching either, lake trout or herring in this lake. The name, La -Leche, is Spanish and means "the milk." A non-sectarian, non-profit or- ganization, the League's purpose is to help encourage "good mothering through breastfeed- ing". The grdup will meet the last Tuesday of each month. A series of four meetings will discuss, informally, different phases of breastfeeding. Topic of the first meeting was "Advantages of Breastfeeding to Mother and Child". Discussion leader was Nicole Mockler. All women who are interested in nursing their babies are invited ... as are their babies. You need not be pregnant or even have a family to attend. If you are a wife and hope some day to have children, if you are a grand- mother, if you are interested ... you are wel- come. La Leche League began in a Chicago suburb nearly twenty years ago, when one mother who had successfully nursed her baby, helped ano- ther who wanted to breastfeed. This is still the basic approach, although the League is now internationally in scope, with more than 2,000 groups helping thousands of women in the United States, Canada, and over thirty foreign countries. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 26th at 8:00 p.m. » For further information about the new Terrace Bay La Leche League Group, contact Nicole Mockler at 825-9255.
