VOL. 20 NO. 6 FEBRUARY 9, I977 20¢ PER COPY TAXPAYERS PAYING FOR SNOWMOBILERS' CARE LESSNESS On Monday, January 24th at the Terrace Bay Town Council meeting the Recreation Committee was asked to look at the problem of snowmobilers " careless use of the Recreation Centre's lawn. 'Every year the Centre puts time and money into the seeding and culturing of a new grass lawn only to have it completely torn up in the winter and spring through inordinate use by snowmobiles. It is against the law to use snow machines on the Rec- reation Centre property but residents are either ignorant "&T™ the law or feel that it somehow does not apply to them. Nii Since the Recreation Centre is as yet the private property of Kimberly- Clark, the Town Council will consider asking K-C if the Town Police may prosecute offending snowmobilers on their behalf. : During the meeting Clerk Bill Hanley also read a letter from the Minis- try of Environment regarding the standard of the landfill site at the Schreiber Dump. Following an inspection the Ministry was very unhappy at the condition of the site and stated that if the Town was not willing to clean up the Dump to Environment Standards that they would be forced to follow the requests of the Ministry by law. On their inspection the Min- istry found that the Dump trench was not complete, there was debris burning out of control, old vehicles were less than 250 ft. away from the burning trench and there was no gate at the road to keep the Public from entering the Dump at any time. Since both Schreiber and Terrace Bay make use of the Dump, the Terrace Bay Town Council felt it was their problem as much as Schreiber's. Terrace Bay would eventually like to have their own Dump Site and are looking at possible sites at the moment. However, for the time being the Terrace Bay Council would like to meet with the Schreiber Council to dis- - cuss the problem. : A letter from the Northern Ontario Municipal Association informed Coun- cil of a meeting to be held in Dryden from May 12th - 14th. Reeve Bras- sard encouraged all the Councillors to attend if possible as he felt the meetings were very educational. Mr. Hanley was asked to make reservations for all the Councillors.
