TERRACE BAY NEWS JANUARY 26, 1977 GRADE 8 ORIENTATION: On Monday evening in Schreiber and Tuesday evening in Terrace Bay a program for the par- ents of Grade 8 students was held at the High School. To start the evening, Mr. Hanley the Guid- ance Counsellor outlined the procedure for the program. Parents were divided into three - groups and each group attended the three half hour sessions. In the first session elementary -school. per- sonnel gave a presentation. Mr. Bishop in- troduced personnel and. the agenda for the session. He also outlined the overall Orien= tation Program from September 1976 to Septem- ber 1977. Mr. Davy, Mr. Shack, Mr. Ditchfield, and Mr. MacAdam outlined the criteria used in _ assisting students select their courses. Mr. Peters outlined the testing procedures used in the schools, their purpose and how they were used. : In the second session Mr. Houston gave an | overview of the level system, giving broad guidelines that could be used by. the student in 'choosing levels. Each Department Head then gave a brief re- sume of subjects and the philosophy offered in his Department. Mr. Cooper - Mathematics Mr. Fournier, Commercial - Mr. Hamilton - English - Mr. Klassen - Geography - History =-- Mr. Lever - Physical Education - Mr. Saranpaa - Technical - Mr. Trach - Intermediate Tech- nology. : " In the third session Mrs. Mulligan describ- ed the changes in the educational system since the 1950's. She also explained the present requirements for' a Secondary School Graduation Diploma, and a Secondary School Honour Graduation Diploma. A brief discus- sion of the Semester System was included. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY DAYS: The public is cordially invited to' attend all or parts of the Professional Activity Days to be held at Lake Superior High School. To assist us in the logistics of seating ar- rangements etc. it will be appreciated if you call the princ¢ipal in advance if you plan on attending any of the sessions. The next Professional Activity Days will be held January 27th, 28th and 31st. Topics of dis- cussion on January 27th will be: Role of the School; Evaluation; Achievement = Attendance; areas discussed during these morning' sessions for the District Playoffs on February 3rd to Core Curriculum; Recommended Courses; Credit Definition. Then Principal, Vice Principal, Department Heads will meet to decide which should be dealt with on Friday to determing definite courses of action for the 1977-78 school year. : The new credit Sefinition in H.S. 1 re- quires a minimum of 110 hours of scheduled time. The present schedule at Lake Superior High School does not meet these new require- ments. As a new scheduling of timetables is required for 1977-78, the afternoon will in- volve the presentation of various proposals from staff. This meeting is not designed to reach a final decision on the schedule to be used in 1977-78. Rather it is to be a brainstorming session to look at all possibilities. At the énd of the session all suggestions will be run | \ off on ditto and distributed to all teachers. "I A - These suggestions will be used for discussion at department meetings and informal talks on Friday. On Monday morning the staff will meet i to make a final decision on the 1977-78 sche- duling of timetables. DUPAS RINK WINS ZONE FOUR Gerry Dupas' Rink received the Hudson Bay Trophy for winning the N.W.O. C.A. Zone Four Playoffs in Terrace Bay.. They defeated the Paul Donaldson Rink from Manitouwadge in the final game and will now advance to Red Lake 6th. The winning team consisted of Gerry : Dupas, Skip; Mike Fenton, Third; Denis Magne, Second and Gary Gusul, Lead. The runner-up foursome was Paul Donaldson, Skip; Gerry Bou- langer, Third; Bob Lennie, Second; Larry Ur- banoski, Lead. . 2 + Schreiber and Marathon Giso ook part in the two day playoff.
