SEPTEMBER 24, 1975 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE I5 details would have to be available. All heal- th professions are stressing prevention and practitioners who encourage and teach their patients methods of preventing disease should be commended. $I0.00 to receive personal health care instruction could be a very worth- while investment. If only one cavity was pre- vented, money would be saved by the patient, let alone time loss, discomfort and appearance. Health being a service occupation, the pat- ient is paying for the practitioner's time and overhead. A dental office is not like a hos- pital in that there is no subsidization of wages, office space, etc. All expenses are derived from patients' fees. Mr. Stokes men- tions O.H.I. and the dentist not asking for it. I presume he did not request it because dental services of this nature are not benefits under O0.H.I1.C. If the patient to whom Mr. Stokes makes ref erence wishes us to investigate, we would re- quire more specific information. He also refers to patients having to wait one or two hours to see their dentist and this is vexatious. There is no doubt that oh occ- asion a dentist may get behind schedule, but in most cases this is not because he plans it that way. Emergencies such as accidents, acute infections, post-operative haemorrhage, intense pain etc. require immediate care and attending to these may be time-consuming. To remove the root of a tooth fractured during an extraction can take many minutes of un- scheduled time. Also time set aside for what might at first appear to be a simple filling might have to be lengthened for ner- ve capping and other more extensive treat- ment which was not seen untiil the treatment was well under way. I believe I can say that a patient having to wait an hour or two for an appointment is the exception, not the rule. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, Dr. Archdekin. If any further in- formation 'is required, please do not. hesitate to contact me. : Kenneth F. Pownall, D.D.D.
