Many Schreiber citizens, clad in ponchos and rubber boots, stood in the unceasing pel- ting rain watching with smiling faces the formal opening of the new dam for the town at Cooks Lake. The handsome bronze plaque on the face of the dam was donated by M.M. Dillon Co. and Scorpia Engineering Firm. Reviewing the history of the project, Reeve H.H. McParland said, in I965 the town council inspected the dam and were concerned about its deterioration; five years later it was suggested consultants be hired to check the structure, and in I973 at the inaugural meeting council decided to employ Underwater Recovery Ltd. of Sault Ste. Marie to inspect the dam, their report being so serious regard- ing its deterioration, Council approached C.P. Rail to build a new dam. A second Consultant Firm, M.M. Dillon, was asked to check and their report was also ser- ious, but they suggested four options, with council deciding to have a new dam built at the same height. A capital grant of $68,750. with $16,000 forgiveable was obtained. A new dam report in May I974 put the cost at $146,000.00 and C.P. Rail was then asked for $50,000.00. When tenders came in asking $328,000.00 C.P. Rail was asked for $100,000.00. After a trip to Toronto, by Reeve McParland councillor H.H. Fischer and clerk-treasurer Aurel Gauthier, when we received $90,000.00 from C.P. Rail and $85,000.00 from the Minis- try of Natural Resources, we went to Thunder Bay and signed a contract with Scorpia Enginee -ring to build this new dam. The dam was symbolically opened by Bary Durant, Scorpio president, and drape over the plague drawn open by Keith Penner, M.P., Al Baxter, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Councillor H.H. Fischer, representing both C.P. Rail and the town - the three financially involved in the success of the project. The dedication was made by the Rev. F.J. Meyer. Mr. Penner, Jack Stokes MLA, Mr. Bax- Petura of the Ministry of Environment and George Humphries were among those who spoke briefly = the town with relief and the others with congratulations. In all, it was a great day for Schreiber - despite the relentless rain. Opening the Medical Centre and the dam A.A. Small, C.P. Rail supt. entertained all the guests and dignitaries at a luncheon in his private car, hosted, because of his unavoidable absence by Gordon Lark, Chief Train Despatcher. Scorpio had planned a steak barbeque for the public, but it could not be held, how- ever, they entertained at a reception held in the town hall as a celebration.
