Dear Coaches, This letter is written on behalf of the refer- ees of Ontario. We would like to commend you and your teams for the respect and consider- ation you have shown us. We enjoy refereeing your games and hope the teams benefit from the experience of playing. However, sometimes the attitude of the players bothers us. Some be- lieve it was all our fault that they lost the game, because we were "against" them. We feel that by doing this, they don't enjoy the game or learn from their mistakes - they're toc busy blaming us. You, the coaches, can relp by encouraging your players to concentra- te on the game - how they performed as individ -uals, and where they could have improved. We hope that winning isn't your only goal, and that you dop't view the calls of the ref- cree that penalize your team as biased or crooked. Coaches and referees do have many common concerns and purposes. It is our aim to improve our refereeing ability by knowing the rules thoroughly and by attending officials' clinics to upgrade our rating. This is so important because pocr ref -ereeing can destroy the fun of a game, espec- ially for the players. If we could meet at tre reginning of the season with the coaches in the leacue, we might be able to establish come policies that are acceptable and under- c+ood ky everyone. The fair and consistent application of the rules on our part should provide equal oppor- tunity for everyone to enjoy the game. If a player asks for an interpretation of a rule we have enforced, we will try to explain it to him without looking down on him or delay- ing the game. We try to set an atmosphere at a game that allows the players to concentrate on using their skill and strategy, without dampening their enthusiasm or allowing play to degenerate into brawling or dirty play. It is good to see the players enjoying them -selves and proving their skill in a game. We try to apply the rules fairly, but we are hum- an and we can make mistakes; young referees, particularly, are under a great deal of press- ure to prove their competence. When the game | has ended we encourage you to come and discuss any part of the game with us so that we both benefit. However, if you are really dissatis- fied with our performance, please send us a written protest to the league conveners. Do help your players to understand and. res- pect our part in the game so that everyone can enjoy the sport more. Sincerely yours, A Referee. Refereeing is the only job where a man must be perfect the first time and improve over the years. ---- EAE TL | rel
