TERRACE BAY news i Vol. 15 No. 48 50 December 13, 1972 15¢ Per WARNING TO SNOWMOBILERS Section 8 of the extracts from the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act of Ontario in the December 6th issue could be taken to mean that it is permissible to cross railway tracks anywhere so long as the machine is brought to a stop until safe to proceed. To avoid misunderstanding, Investi- gator J. Crook of Canadian Pacific Pol- ice warns that it is illegal to oper- ate a snowmobile on railway property other than at a recognized crossing, and persons found doing so face charg- es under Section 359 (2) of The Railway Act which reads "Every person who with- out authority therefor from the Comp- any operates a vehicle (which includes a snowmobile) upon the yard or right of way of the Company, except where the same is laid across or along a highway, is liable on summary convic- tion to a penalty NOT EXCEEDING ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS To date there have been no fatalit- ies on railway property involving snow mobiles but there have been several narrow escapes, and the regulations will be enforced. Kloo Lake, on the Alaska High- way, north of Vancouver, Yukon, was named after the Indian name for "fish". CHRISTMAS. AND TREES ~..THE SAFE.WAY Think Safe-Tree first at Christmas. Choose a 'fresh cut tree' with a high moisture cont- ent says the Ontario Safety League. Bend one of the needles gently. If it breaks, the tree is too dry. Try another. When you are ready to put up your tree, bring it in from its cool storage place out of doors and cut 2 inches diagonally from the tree's base. Stand the tree in a container of water and refill it daily to a level above the cut line. Keep away from fireplaces, radiators, televisions and other sources of heat. Use only CSA approved lighting sets and inspect yearly for frayed cords and damaged sockets. If an extention cord is required, never run it under a rug, where heavy traffic could damage the cord"s protective covering. Lights are best left on for short periods of time only. Remeber to turn tree lights off when you leave the room. Buy non-flam- mable decorations. Never use candles on or near the tree. Beware using string lights for a metallic tree. An off-tree spotlight is better. If a fuse blows, redistribute load to other circuits and never replace a 15 amp fuse with a larger size. Even under the best of conditions, a fresh cut tree will last little more than a week without dropping needles and drying out. Dispose of it before it becomes a danger.
