PAGE 12 TERRACE BAY NEWS OCTOBER 4, 1972 Family Counselling - cont'd from page 9 - something which was not immediately recognized as a problem and consequently was not dealt with then and there. One person may not be at fault specific ally but both have become extremely frustrated with themselves, each other, and their marriage, their family, because of their inability to get out of the rut. And it is almost impossible for them to help themselves since the same defective methods of com- municating and solving problems will be incapable of helping them solve their problems now. They must be given new tools! Why is it so difficult to go for help of this kind? Strangely even in our 20th Centure "Enlightened" society we still seem to have certain taboos. One of these is "thou shalt not have mental, emotional, or personal problems, and above all, marriage and fam- ily problems". It is alright to have medical and dental problems, periodic checks for cancer or T.B., but to be afflicted with marital conflict is somehow seen as a personal failure, yet it is one of the most complex relationships a person can enter. A mature person recognizes that others can be of assistance to him. To seek help is in reality a sign of strength rather than weakness.
