PAGE 10 TERRACE BAY NEWS OCTOBER 27, 1971 LETTER TO THE EDITOR Last week a letter appeared in our local paper which shamefully endeavoured to discredit by the employment of ridicule, distortion, and poorly dis- guised fabrication, an extremely important and mean ingful report made by me the previous week regard- ing an unforunate accident which occurred on our premises. My report was not based on any so called : "research" but on my actual presence on the scene seconds after the accident occurred. The unsolicited remarks made by my attendant are, af this stage, unimportant but nevertheless true. In very plain and simple language no normal person will deny that an eight year old child was involved in an accident because of improper use of a commercial area. This letter is written with the same intent as the first one. 'That is to repeat our concern and to warn that similar accidents are bound to happen where kids are involved. The human species is far from perfect. There are unfortunates with low distorted mentalities and ex- treme lack of intelligence. For these unfortunates | would like to monotonously repeat that: Firstly the facilities of a private com= mercial building are strictly for the use of its patrons. Secondly, the purpose of the sign over our wash- room entrance is to indicate to service station pa- trons the location of our washrooms and the service station's entrance to the restaurant. Thirdly, since the opening of the motel and the much increased traffic involving three entrances and exits, plus continual movement in the parking area, the manager of Terrace Bay Enterprise realized that pedestrian traffic, particularly the children, was too hazardous and therefore every effort was made to discourage it. This has been and will continue to be the policy of Terrace Bay Enterprises. The letter that appeared last week in comparison stands out from start to finish as exaggerated, mal- icious and a vindictive attempt to detract from the veracity of my statements by senseless allegations, base accusations, and unpardonable insults fo my employees. In their defense | would like to state that such an inference very clearly demonstrates questionable motives. In their defense and for the benefit of those who are not acquainted with them | would like to state loudly demonstrates a sad lack of these qualities that our employees are reliable and trustworthy, conscientous and responsible. These are qualities that people should prize. Anyone with the audacity to unjustly question these qualities in a person . hi mself. It is my responsibility to set policy in the control of traffic on our premises. It is my responsibility to facilitate the movement of traffic and to con- trol and eliminate any hazards. Anyone presump= tuous enough to assume the ability or the authority to interfere with our policy is indeed suffering from arrested mental development. * Anyone who has the gall to question and stupidly try to minimize my efforts in discharging my res- ponsibility to my company and community is mak= ing a serious error. | have been waiting since the accident for this man to see me and | am not at all surprised that he has no desire to discuss his moral obligations and responsibilities. I would like to mention a conversation | had' today with a parent who instructed me not to hes- itate to boot any child of his who ventures near our service station area. This is a good indication that the reporting of this accident has had the desired effect. It is quite ironical that after so many years of our widely known warnings and efforts in traffic control and safety that a ludicrous effort is made to place the responsibility on us when such warnings finally materialize.into reality. In closing let me say that the importance of safe- ty to us is too great to be treated with farcial re- marks . Let me repeat that it is stupid and utterly im= possible to deny the fact that despite the efforts of Terrace Bay Enterprises and due fo childish care- lessness a near fatal accident occured. Selfishly trying to alibi responsibility to cover up moral obligations will contribute nothing towards correcting this deplorable situation. ; We have been serving the community for over twenty years. During the summer we employ over fifty-three people. Thirty-three of these are students. We have four operations which necessitate a lot of attention and careful supervision. The manager of these operations has enough to do without worrying about the safety of unauthorized traffic and senseless destruction. cont'd page 1...
