As the Tax bills for 1971 will not be issued before June ratepayers can pay their taxes on an estimate based on last years tax statement. A 3% discount is allowed on taxes paid on or before January 29, or 2 1/2% if paid on or before February 26, 1971. Mrs. M. Harness, speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Schreiber township council, welcomed councillors J.S. Caccamo and H.J. McParland back to office, saying the service of experienced men is invaluable. He also offered good wishes to council- lors R.B. Spadoni and H.H. Fischer, Mrs. Mary Zombori, clerk treasurer; A.J. Gauthier, assistant clerk; Edmund Borutski, Town utility man; Mrs. Inez McCuaig and Mrs. Norah McGuire, press. The town, said Mr. Harness, is better off financial- ly this year, than ever before in his experience on the council with outstanding principal on debentures at a new low. The reserve fund set up in 1970 enabled the order- ing of a new fire truck to be paid for on delivery. The new post office, in the centre of town, street names again placed and the long awaited sewage system, are the goals he has set for this year. The town is deeply appreciative of the assistance given by the Kinsmen and the Ice Fund committee toward the rink. The Kinsmen, for the second time, have vol- unteered to assist in the numbering of the streets. Mr. McParland mentioned the equalization factor, lowered by 5.8% has lowered Schreiber's equalized assessment by one half million. He also hoped steps would be taken to improve the delinquent tax situa- tion, that a consultant firm be engaged fo get a professional analysis of the Cooks Lake dam: , which supplies the town water. Mr. Spadoni expressed his interest in seeing a study of land site locations for future needs of the community, the consideration of a community hall, a great present need in the town, and is concerned with fire protection in the rink. He would also like to see the school town playground completed with the aid of the recreation committee. : Mr. Fischer supported the ideas of Mr. Spadoni | and Mr. McParland, in particular that all projects presently unfinished should be completed. Mr. Caccamo agreed with the others that the rink, sewers, lighting, culverts are matters of immediate interest and he would like fo see more authority given to standing committees, to enable them to make decisions without referring to the full council.
