Mrs. Mary Henry Page 3 THREE FIRES, TWO LECTURES [ND THEN TWO FUNER..LS We have read, and have written many an editorial on fire prevention and the tragic cost of carelessness in that field of public and perscnal safety. But the most telling sermon we have ever scen on the subject is a terse lettor from ./sst, Fire Chief Bob Rogers of Seattle, Washington, to the Nation- al Fire Protection Association, Packed with meaning for Ltlantians and for people every- where, the letter runs thus: "On July 17, 1948, we hod a fire ina hotel room occupied by a husband and wife. It was caused by smoking in bed, The couple were smoked up a bit, we gave them a few whiffs of oxygen and a lecture on the evils of smoking in bed, cleaned up the mess and returned to quarters. On June 8, 1949, at 12:22 a.m., we had a fire in ao hctel room occupied by a husb- and and wife; in fact, it was the same hotel, the same rcom and the same couple as our fire a year previous. This time the couple got smoked up a bit, the woman was burned. We gave them some whiffs of oxygen, shipped the woman tc the hospital, gave the man a lecture on the evils of smoking in bed, cleaned up the mess and returned to quarters, On June 19, 1949, at 5:35 a.m., we had a Tire in a hotel room occupied by a husband and wife, You guessed it, it was the same otel, the same room and the same couple. This time the couple were knocked out and burned; in fact, the woman was dead and the man was shipped to the hospital, where he died three days later from shock and burns, There was nc chance for a lecture this time, for both were unconscicus when we got there, So endeth the story of Mr. and Krs. Gus Lander -- three fires, two lectures and two funerals. It seems that people and not things really cause fires," 0-0-0 L,DIES' S0PTB,LL TL.CTISES In preparation for the visit of Bryan's Ladies! team on July lst, two practises fcr the local ladies will be held this week.
