4 MESSAGE FROM THe ONT RIO FIuE MARSH/IL'S OFFICE Re: Brushed Rayon Sweaters, etc. Recently there has been considerable reference in the newspapers to wearing- apparel made of brushed rayon. These fabrics consist of a smooth, finely-woven cloth with ag brushed surface or nap on one side. Some are made of viscose which is hizhly flammable and burns exceedingly rapidly. In general brushed viscose rayon is similar to brushed cotton or cctton batting in its fire hazard characteristics, We understand that this type has been manufactured in the United States and sold by door-to-door salesmen in various parts of Ontario. Other types of rayon clothing manufactured in Canada, as well as in other countries, are made of ace-~ tate cellulose rayon which burns much more slowly. The two types of brushed rayon can be distinguished by the following comparisens:- (a) the nap on the viscose rayon feels harsher and more wiry than on the acetate cellulose rayon; the nap on the viscose rayon is more easily ignited that the acetate cellu- lose nap; flame spreads almost as a flash on the viscose rayon nap but spreads much more slowly on the acetate eellulocse, (b) (c) Care should be taken not to confuse the acetate rayon with the viscose type, for although the acetate will burn, like many other fabrics, it does not constitute nenrly 80 serious a hazard to life, The tests that we have suggested should ensble any person to decide which of the materials he is deal- ing with. The dangerous viscose brushed rayon garments should not be worn, and public should be warned against their hazard. Ls far as we have heard, the viscose brushed rayon is being sold only by door-to-door salesmen. however, any merchant is found selling this hazardous type, under existing legislation about all the fire chief can do is to require the merchant to place these goods on a counter well-removed from where the public passes or where smoking is permitted, and to place on it a sign recoding "HIGHLY FL/AMMABLE®Y, 0-0-0 It, A hangover is something to occupy a head that wasn't used the night before.
