TERRACE BAY NEWS Flavor is locked in, air is locked out We let them rise slowly to seal each cell - this is really big business'! Is it '~ + handled by trained business personel? Maybe I'd find out. Toronto Trustees decided they would not accede to the latest demands pre- sented by the Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation (the OSS TF) and asked all other trustees to back them up by not hiring teachers for the September 1970 semester. Many of the other Boards agreed to do this but some did not: Our Board, The Lake Superior Board of Education did agree to back Toronto and this accounts for the see- thing unrest among High School Teachers in our district who have presented their own demands and can get no answers until the Toronto dispute is settled. While both the Trustees and the teachers aren't talking about district affairs a word dropped here and there indicates that (1) salary increases (2) time during the teaching day for lesson preparation and (3) changes in the 'hired for Manitouwadge High School MAY 28, 1970 to work under an existing Teacher- Librarian? - effective June Ist* (a Teacher=Librarian has a "Librar- ian credit). At this point the Chairman, now on "For Consideration" on the Agenda invited opinions from the 'loor on the moratorium on hiring. Mr. Cvitkovich asked for a reply to a letter written by the district representative of the OSSTF, Mr. Dukes of Schreiber High School, re changes in dates on which teachers may resign. Mr. W. Rowsome requested that Mr. Duke's letter be given more con- sideration but Mr. Wainwright replied that the teachers have "brought upon themselves" . i.e., the pink list - He explainea the Trustees stand and ended by asking "what will the Board get in return? " Another teacher asked " If Toronto 'is settled why are we still not settled here?" . Mr. Rowsome said the teachers here are not in a position to make i concessions but that the use of extended resignation dates is most desirable in getting matters settled and that he is most anxious to fill .the vacancies on his staff. At this point the room was cleared so that the committee could meet in camera. After fifteen minutes recess Mr. Wainwright announced that the } present resignation dates (Nov. 30 and Mar. 31) are among the unanswered demands . 1 The head buzzing stopped as Mr. Wain- wright of Manitouwadge who is Board Chairman called the meeting to order. The resignation of Mr. Dennis Cooper of Marathon High School staff was accepted after a debate among the trustees when one said "appeasement does not always work and that this is a classic example and these teachers move when they want to anyhow, "etc. To the casual observer it was all a bit mystify- ing but after J. Kelly, Principal of Marathon High School, said he had a Board deferred a decision until letter outlining Mr. Cooper's reasons after the meeting (in Toronto) on following which he would make availabl@ Saturday and the Board passed a argy like a shot in the (arm)? to the Board, the resignation was accept- resolution in support of the Trustees :ople in that auditorium plus twelve |ed Council.
