RETIRI NG VETERANS HONORED The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Kitch- ener Division #562, gave a banquet, attended by 90, honoring recently retired veterans - W. Hawker, G. Gawley, L. Potvin, T. Whent, A. Cosgrove, L. Payette and H. Costall. At the head table were George A. Scott, Sec- retary-Treas. and Mrs. Scott, Mr. F.J. Koehn, CPR Supt. and Mrs. Koehn, D. E. Rosie, local - chairman and Mrs. Rosie, P. Humenicki, Chief Engineer, and Mrs. Humenicki and E. Machin of Montreal, General Chairman. Grace was said by George Bi rch. Master of Ceremonies Don Rosie, welcomed the crowd, introduced head table guests, also Gordon Nesbitt, local chairman of the B. of L.F. and E. and his wife. Mr. Rosie pointed out that a complete wedding party of some years back, were present and asked Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rummery and their -_ SEPTEMBER 25, 1969 attendants Mrs. Marguerite Wells and Don McCouan to stand up. ' Mr. Rosie, who began his career as so many others in Schreiber division, working in the "shop" drew shouts ot laughter when he said that although the practical side of railroading had changed in many ways, some traditions still exist such as "stealing miles" which arouses wild objections, but reluc- | tant admiration for the culprit. CPR Supt. Mr. Keohn, said he had been wondering, looking around at the many veterans, with full heads of hair , just where in his railroad career, he had gone wrong. The days of 'steam' were hard ones, but apparently these veterans have interests which keep their leisure fully occupied, and obviously the comradeship of working days still is a happy one. Eric Machin, after congratulating the veterans, stated his address was an admonition, anda warning to men "How to Teach Your Wife To Be A Widow." He has been involved in so many sad cases where no arrangements such as the all important will has been made, nor has the husband ever spoken with his wife of the security which she can call upon. The operative word in all cases, - for the veteran, or later, his dependents, is apply. These benefits have been secured by many years of struggle and thought But still must be applied for. A man ex- pecting to be pensioned should make application six months before retirement. Now he may retire at 60 but of course there is a decreasé in the pen- sion. In all cases, with either veteran or wife, the Iecal chairman can give answers to all questions on protection. Mr. Machin then presented tie clips and matching cuff links bearing miniature designs of the old diamond stack steam locomotives to the retiring men. they also received wallets, with the Lodge insignia. Mr. Rosie said it was a great pleasure to have four past Chief Engineers present - A. Cosgrove, 25 years member; J.D. Gagnon, 25 year member; G. Birch and A. McColeman, 20 year members. It was particularly pleasing to see J.D. Bryson, 82 years old, and George Smith 85 years old, present to receive membership pins. A 60 year membership pin was presented in ab- sentia to M.A. Small of Toronto Mr. Rosie also asked J.E. Gagnon to say a few words. Mr. Gagnon spoke of his happy association with the men in Schreiber Division and introduced his guest, Harold Atwill of Nipigon. Thirty year membership badges were presented to G.J continued page 15 _...........
