In addition to the many cards sent during the summer by the sick and visiting committee, farewell gifts were presented to Mrs. Lorraine Fadden, moving to Fort. William, and Mrs. Lor- raine Weaver, moving to White River. Mrs. Jean Fischer, reporting for the CP and T committee stated they have arranged a penny auction for October 3 in the town hall, starting at 7:30 p.m, Members. were asked to bring donations for this to the next meeting. Mrs. Helen Wallace reported on the luncheon served to the students en route to the United Nations in July, and also, on the successful Past Noble: Grand's Night, held in June. Mrs, Bern Whent gave a de- tailed and interesting report of the Rebekah Assembly she at- tended in Toronto in June. Mrs, Fisher reported on the district association meeting held in June in Port Arthur. The date for installation of new cfficers was set for October 18. Donations were made to the, District Association, The Youth' Pilgrimage Fund, and the Bur-: sary Fund. A. most appreciative letter was received from Mrs. Bar- bara' Hutton, on behalf of the . students on the tour, for the hospitality given them in Schrei- ber. The Retarded Children's Association also sent a note of gratitude. Mrs. Wallace displayed greet- ing cards which are now on sale by the Lodge. : ALLAN TURNER HIGHEST STANDING IN GRADE 8 .Mrs. Joe Campbell presided for. regular meeting of Schrei- ber Women's Institute on Sep- tember 9. Roll call was an- swered by giving the name of the first school each member had attended. The motto was "Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not de- part from it." Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Wesley Clemens, and Mrs. Tommy Bo- lan were appointed to attend the District Area Convention on Sept. 16-17 in Fort Frances. Mrs. Alvin Slater gave a re- port on the meeting of the Dis- trict Directors which she at- tended in Port Arthur. Mrs... Sandra Scollie, home economist, of the 4H club, wrote with information of the course which is to be given by Helen McKercher, on the choosing and using of fabrics. It will be held on October 7 and is open to the public. Those planning to take it are asked to bring box lunches. Mrs. Todes- co, the secretary, will. write the local church groups and lodges informing them. A letter was received from H. M. Ermel, former public school principal, commending the WI for the scholarship they offer annually to top student in Grade 8. It was decided to place a plaque in the school bearing the names of the winners. Mrs. Todesco reported a Bride Cookbook was given to Sylvia Harness, and that the new coffee urn for the supplies @as arrived. She was author- ized to purchase a set of cut- lery for the cupboard: Cards and supplies were granted to the friendship con: vener, Mrs. Wesley Clemens gave an interesting report on educa- tion: In Schreiber this year the public school and the high school opened under the super- vision of the new Lake Superior Board ef Education. The high school has a staff of 17 and 218 students, who will: take either the four-year commercial or a five - year arts and science course. A large group travels daily by bus to Terrace Bay to take trade and _ occupation courses. The public school, under gui- dance oi Robert Cressman, has 203 pupils and 10 teachers. Grades 7 and 8 are being taught on the rotary system. Holy Angels Separate School with Siter St. Timotny as prin- | cipal has 16 teachers and 338 _ pupils. Many of the local high school graduates go on to higher insti- tutiens of learning -- the major- ity. to Lakehead University. Jim Gellert of Schreiber was one of the class of 319 there this year to receive a bachelor of arts degree, Five Schreiber students grad- uated in June from the Lake- 'head Teachers' College and all are now employed in out-of- town schools. Confederation College of Ap- plied Arts and Technology is qe of 19 such community col- leges throughout Ontario, where 1,200 day and night stu- dents can take unusual and in- teresting courses not available in other schools. A local graduate from this school this year was Sherrill Condie who took the kindergar-. ten course for pre-school chil- dren. é Several local girls have re- cently graduated from Schools of Nursing at the Lakehead and other places. Following the meeting, Mrs. J. D. Bryson, on behalf of the Institute, presented a cheque to. Allan Turner for being the top student in Grade 8, public school. Darlene . Desmoulins who won the same award in the separate school was unable © to be .present to receive her cheque, she is now living in the Lakehead.
