The Ontario Dept. of Education has authorized a Sex Education Course fo Secondary Schools beginning at the Grade 9 level .. TERRACE BAY NEWS FEBRUARY 1, 1968 Mr. Ferguson outlined the new course of study, which considers sexual development from puberty to _ adulthood - 'Boy to Man' = 'Girl to Woman'. He ~ discussed methods of presentation, such as Audio-vis= val Aids. He stated that moral issues are discussed, but no answere are given. Claire Belliveau said she felt that Sex Education -- should be started in the home. . She felt no student ~ should go into a Sex Education class 'cold', without -- some preparation. She stated that proper attitudes towards sex were best developed in the home. A Father-daughter, Mother-son relationship is ideal . A value system must accompan y the course. Mixed groups and discussions, not lectures, were the best setting for such a course, she felt. Mrs. Chisholm stated she would like to see Sex Education taught-at upper elementary levels. The right person to teach would be extremely important, and must be completely relaxed with the subject and - the class. The clinical, psychological and anatomi=-- cal aspects must be taught. She felt that morals can only be taught at home and at Church. Parents should give honest, wholesome guidance, and there i a need for good communication between parents and children. Father Lafreniere stated that. Sex Education is a human problem, rather than local or sectarian. A '| family life program has far reaching consequences. Such a program requires total community participatio He defined such terms as sex, sexuality, sex educa -- tion, and sex instruction. Sex education deals with the will of the child, it imparts a value system regard less. Sex instruction consists in giving a child infor- mation. It is inadequate because it deals only with the intellect. He gave specific rules for teachers and parents. First and most important, is to tell the truth. Respon sibility for sex education lies primarily with the par- ents. Schools must help with trained teachers. It is the joint responsibility of both parents, who are meant to take God's place on earth. A discussion period followed, with questions from the floor. ; PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST TO BE HELD | The Ontario School Trustees' and Municipal Councillors' Association Elementary School Public Speaking Contest sponsored by Ontario Hydro North Shore Division will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 7.30 p.m. in the Terrace Bay High School Auditorium.
