Schreiber High Schools's basketball team, under the coaching of Albert Costa, has developed into a fast-moving, hard-working group, piling up some decisive victorys. Last week they took Terrace Bay with a score of 96 - 16, and Marathon with a 94-40 score. Alex Gauthier and Jim Mikus are having a great season with Schreiber . Schreiber girls won over Marathon 20 - 8. Sixty-four attended the Christmas dinner meeting of the Catholic Women's League, served by the United Church Women .in'St. 'Andrew!s Church hall. A round of Christmas carols and old favourite songs were enjoyed, led by the Sisters of St. Joseph and accordionist Tony Commisso played many numbers . During the brief business meeting, plans were made for a draw for a Centennial coin set in March. Gifts were exchanged between the members. siitins athe aii ati asakats : a MANY ATTEND JACK STOKES NIGHT Over two hundred supporters and friends in Schrei- ber met in the town hall to honor Jack Stokes, re- cently-elected member for the Thunder Bay riding. Pat Guina spoke briefly followed by a short address by Mr. Stokes in which he said he realized the great responsibility associated with the honor and privilege of representing this vast new riding, at Queen's Park. He said it was obvious to him that attending to the many and varied problems of his constituents will be continuing challenge. He thank ed all those who had worked so effectively during the recent Provincial election, assuring them that victory would have been impossible for him, without their assistance. He promised to do everything possible to see that the people of his riding were represented in the best manner possible, and urged them to bring their problems to his attention. . In addition to local problems, Mr. Stokes will be con- cerned with the Department of Lands and Forests, Tourism and Information, Hydro, and is deputy whip of the N.D.P. caucas. He is also on the Economics and Pollution and Conservation and Development committee. Honored guests at the occasion were Edward Gerow, oldest member of the N .D.P. in Schreiber, « - and John Carty, of Ottawa, who served two terms in the Legislative Assembly in 1919 and 1926 with the United Farmers - both gentlemen in their 80's. # Also here for the evening was Mr. Stokes' sister, Mrs Vincent Cosgrove of Chapleau. The evening was spent in dancing followed by a cold plate lunch. The service was in the form of a Prayer Meeting. a WORKSHOP HELD IN HOLY ANGELS SCHOOL Over seventy teachers in the district attended a Language Experience Workshop held in Holy Angels' School over the weekend, with Harold Shack of the school staff as chairman. Dr. Elizabeth Thorn and Sister St. Edmund, both of North Bay, were guest speakers. Dr. Thorn spoke on bringing reading instruction_up to date (all grades and Sister St. Edmund gave a demonstration lesson - Developing an experience Chart - co-relating crea tive writing, phonics, spelling and reading. Other topics were the Evaluation of Language Experience- the place of evaluation in the program, and Schedul- ing classroom Activities - room arrangements --- time blocks. Dr. Thorn, a native of North Bay, received her elementary and secondary education there, graduate ing as a teacher from North Bay Teachers' College. She completed her B.A. Course at the University of Toronto, her M.A. at the University of Chicago, and was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Chicago last December.
