TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO SEW Question: My daughter wants to sew. | sew some- well enough to get a few compliments, but how do | go abot teaching a child of nine? Answer: First, let me assure you that if your, young- ster shows, interest, nine years of age is not too young (neither is eight or seven for that matter). And don't be surprised if instead of your daughter, it's your son who wants to learn. At an early age, youngsters see sewing as a means of putting things together. They usually are motivat ed by a desire for the end product - often one of : their own creation. Most educators strongly believe that sewing should be treated as a creative activity. They caution a- gainst imposing too much emphasis on sewing methods too early while they strongly recommend teaching how to use tools properly to develop manipulative skills. Although each child is unique, when teach- ing a child, there are some generalities that may be helpful. Youngsters enjoy working with their hands. They enjoy the prestige of being allowed to use adult equipment - of entering into adult activity. Because - their attention span is short, children need guidance in order to achieve some small goals within each ac- tivity period. Because they excel in following defi- nite directions, children are a challenge to teach. They will want to know the why of each step you show them. (Cont'd on page 13 column 2) | TERRACE BAY NEWS.
