=-WS PAGE 9 TEN COMMANDMENTS OF SNOWMOBILE SAFETY The Ontario Safety'League advises one and all to take note of the following safety tips: (1) Driving instruction is required for the safe operation of a snowmobile. (2) Treat a snowmobile with the respect and care due any power-driven vehicle, and recognize the limitations of your ability to operate it. (3) Study carefully the operating manual supplied by the man ufacturer of the snowmobile you are using. (4) Know your legal status regarding licencing, traffic regula tions and responsibilities pertaining to public liability and property damage when operating or trailering a snowmobile. (5) Avoid public thoroughfares and when necessary cross at right angles using extreme caution. (6) Do not operate a snowmobile on frozen lakes or rivers wit out first checking ice thickness and having an intimate know- ledge of water currents. (7) Wear appropriate, warm, windproof clothing; insulated footwear and mitts, toque with attached face mask; shatter- proof, tinted goggles and safety helmet. | (8) For casual snowmobiling within reach of assistance, carry | spare drive-belt and spark plugs with tools for installation. (9) For distant safari operation carry the following equipment: snowshoes, emergency fuel, map and compass, axe, knife, waterproof matches, mess kit, emergency rations, first aid kit, waterproof shelter and survival blanket. (10) Do not atfempt distant safaris without an experienced _ person in charge; and use the buddy system, two snowmobiles or more. CATERPILLARS IN DECEMBER? ? On December 20, Nap Vienneau of Laurier Ave, spare time trapper, phoned the News Office to report that on a trip to check his trap lines on December 19, he had found in the bush and "brought back alive" a CATERPILLAR. We all know it's been an unbelievably mild winter so far, but we'd have thought the tempertures we have been enjoying would have been a bit too cold for one of these seemingly delicate creatures.
