TO THE TAXPAYERS OF TERRACE BAY Further to the HighSchool Board's presentation of their proposed expansion program in last weeks - Terrace Bay News. I would like to take this opp- ortunity to explain Council position. Council has been in contact with the Board since last January. We have had at least four joint meet- ings within that period and have been kept thorough ly informed of the Board's progress . We do appreciate that the lack of information has caused some concern among tax payers but | am sure you can understand that neither the Board of Council was in a position to make public statements while negotiations were still in progresss In August we received an application from the Hig School B oard to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval of their expansion program which we approved by resolution and forwarded to the Muni- Louis Bohus from Marathon. _more than 1/16" beyond the tread of the tire. TERRACE BAY NEWS cipal Board. In due course, we received a copy of the tentative approval from the Municipal Board which had been forwarded to the High School Board. Upon receiving this tentative approval ,, Council did discuss at length the possibility of submitting the question of the expenditure to a plebiscite. In order to do this, we discovered that we would have to reject the Board's application. This council refused to do so for the following reasons: Because we firmly believe that this extension of our educational system is badly needed. Any delay in the progress at this late date would #eopard- ize our chances to qualify for the generous grants by the senior governments. That in 1970 our original debentures would be retired which will offset any new debentures. We believe that the lack of adeq- vate secondary school education has been the cause, at least in part, of many of our former residents leav-| ing Terrace Bay. In view of the importance of ediitation today and after exhaustive study, we believe this is a progress- ive step we in Terrace Bay can afford without any hardships ta anyone. As far as | am concerned, | might tell you that we have a lot of work and study put into this project and have honestly legislated for the common good of all our people and L, for one,.am prepared to stake any further political aspirations | may have on this decision.
