While the contract ap- pears optimistic, this particular pair almost went to six spades, a completely unmakeahle con- tract. Once North supported hearts and established the trump suit, South gave his spade ace in hopes that North would cue- bid an ace if he held one. South -could not call for aces as he would have no idea which aces, if any, North held. Once the diamond ace was cue-Bid by North, South bid the slam and- faces a real challenge of his playing skill. West made a safe , lead of the spade eight spot, South winning East's queen with - _ his king in the closed hand. A diamond to the board and a diamond return brought him safely back to the closed hand, dropping West's diamond queen. At trick four, South led a trump -- and discovered the break. Then he led a low diamond to dummy. West leaped in with the queen and led the club ace. Even with- out the good club on the board, South had his slam in the bag. Trumping the club ace, he drew the remaining trump and claim- ed the balance. For more bridge playing fun by yourself and some expert challenges, try an Auto- bridge set.
