The most successful winter carnival, by common consent, was held this year by Schreiber high school, with everyone in- volved in the fun and sport ac- tivities. ; The school was divided into four house leagues for the three- day event with the house of Canuck emerging victorious 'with 96 points. Starting on Thursday outdoor activities included a human dog sled race, followed by snowshoe and obstacle races for girls and boys. Dominic Pellagrino was MC for a variety show in the evening with Wendy Weaver as folk songs by Brenda and Bili Duncan, three monologues by Terry McParland and selections pianist. The program included - Rosemary Speziale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Speziale won first prize in the oral essay contest held in Holy Angels' School, Schreiber. Rosemary will represent her school in the hydro public speaking contest being held in Red Rock today. The winner there competes at the district level in Port Arthur and the winner there travels by the school choir. In novelty events Dom Pella- grino won the beard growing contest and Susan Bromley and Boyd Drake set a fast-pace in the cracker-eating contest While these and other con- tests were being carried out, H. M. Ermel, L. R. McCuaig and 'Harold Shack judged the ice carvings, awarding first prize to Grade 10 for a dinosaur, sec- ond to Grade 12 for old woman in a shoe, and third to Grade 11 for Snoopy. Jody David and Corrie Eaton were crowned king and queen of the carnival at the dance. Climaxing the weekend of fun was a monster fireworks dis- play after the dance. to Toronto during the Easter holidays to compete with others __from across Ontario. Schreiber Kinsmen are pro- viding travelling expenses for the Schreiber winner to Red Rock. Other students entered in the contest were Lola Scott, Maureen Campbell and Michael Spadoni. The 9th Oratorical Contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, St. Edward's Council #3551, was held in Schreiber High School with Manitouwadge, Mara- thon, Terrace Bay and Schreiber schools participating Grand Knight, S.Chicoine was Chairman for the event and Principal E.E. Forgues spoke briefly. All nine contestants received gifts marking the occasion. Roly Sinotte assisted Mr. Chicoine in presenting these. The winner, in the Junior group was Ginny May of Schreiber, her topic "Letter From Viet Nam"; Jack Cruickshank of Terrace Bay was runner-up, his topic "Humanity". Winner in the Senior division was John Helliwell of Marathon, his topic "Science Fiction"; runner up was Gordon Moorey, Schreiber - topic - "Dissolve Indian Res- ervations". The students were all accompanied by school staff members. The judges were Rev.1.G.Husser, Terrace Bay, Mrs. C.Todesco, Rossport; and Mrs. Lester McCuaig, Schreiber. R .Afflect of Schreiber school was time keeper and Miss Wendy Weaver pianist for the evening. Refresh ments at the end of the program were provided by Joe Commisso and served by Miss Betty McGuire and Miss Evelyn Fournier. Mrs. Irene Geary has returned after visits with rel- atives in Montreal, St.Jerome, Three Rivers Que. and New York city. Mrs. B. Sisson of Orillia is guest of Mr. & Mrs. R. Sisson also visiting her daughter Marj. (Mrs. Ralph Morrill) and family. Cyril Sparkes and Nick Racioppe were in North Bay to attend a meeting of the railway Non-Ops.
