Paul Bennett,Director of the Art Institure of Ont- ario, held an enthralled audience both afternoon and - evening in the high school when he displayed a coll- ection of eight Canadian paintings and discussed them. For members of the Art Clubs of Schreiber and Terrace Bay it was an opportune occasion to improve their own knowledge. For others who wish to understand and appreciate the artist's purpose it was g happy opportunity when they could ask quest- ions which were answered simply. Mr. Bennett had 'eight paintings on which he lectured, then invited his audience to ask questions. He was quite enter- tained by the unanimous reaction to one painting depicting, (according to the artist) a woman in a Toronto market, but which everyone here felt resembl ed the figure of an Eskimo woman. He was certain this reaction would be of interest to the artist. He urged students interested in an art career to bring samples of their work for criticism, along with work of the Art Clubs. Evidence of Mr. Bennett's sincer- ity and simple dialogue was seen when adults taking night school courses deserted them. at coffee break, to hear him speak. Schreiber High School was host to the Ontario Trustee and Ratepayers Public speaking contest. Participating schools, in prepared and impromptu speeches were Nipigon-Red Rock, Geraldton Comp- osite and Schreiber. Michelle Landry represented Nip-Rock in prepared speeches. Barbara Reid and Carolyn Bredin represented Geraldton in prepared and impromptu speeches, respectively and Ginny May gave the prepared speech for Schreiber and Douglas Stefurak the impromptu. E.E.Forgues, Principal, Schreiber principal, was area convenor and judges were Rev. C.E.Prinselaar, Mrs. W.Haske and Mrs. Ross Hill. Michelle Landry won the prepared speech and Carolyn Bredin the Impromptu award. They now enter contests in Port Arthur and winners there go to Toronto.
