With 6 to 10 points and no support (lacking four cards in bid suit) bid one no trump; with 6 to 10 and support give a simple raise or one rank higher; and with 11 points or more give a two-over- one response and show partner's suit later. These basic rules will usually indicate the suit to be trumps, the number of points in responder's hand, and the final contract. Today's North is too weak for a jump raise in spades, too strong for a one no trump response and he hasn't the prop- er four card support for spades. He is content with bidding two diamonds to show 10+ points and a later bid of three spades to show his three card support. South knows that North hasn't 13 points or he would have open- ed the bidding, he knows North has at least three spades, and can count on 11 or 12 points from North. Therefore, with his own 16 points, game _ should easily be possible. Playing at four spades, South wins the heart lead, draws four rounds of trumps and makes his contract losing one trick in each of the outside suits.
