See page re SCHREIBER, ONTARIO - - TELEPHONE 115 TELEVION IN ST.MARTIN'S SCHOOL Note: Commencing this week we present a new re- porter, Marlyn MacDonald, a student at St .Martin's School, who will contribute articles on activities in and connected with the school . "On Tuesday, September 20, Grades 4, 5 and 6 of St.Martin's Separate School viewed, on television the first lesson in a series of eleven programs on mathematics. This is a new approach to teaching math and helps students in two major ways:- (1) the T.V.Teachers are experts, therefore the pupils learn more than they woud normally: (2) the novelty of a television in class holds the attention of the stu- dents for a longer period than usual . Last year only grades seven and eight watched the televised series on Math. It is hoped that, this year, all the classes may benefit from them. Below, in an excerpt from the Minister's message, William G .Davis tells us why we now use television in school : "In an age when rapid communication of impor- tant ideas and events is so essential, not only for national and international understanding, but also for many aspects of our daily life, the contribution of television on the education of our children and young adults must grow and expand." : Expanding it is! This year the Department of Education will produce and arrange to have trans- mitted, programs and program lessons designed for primary, junior, intermediate and senior grades within the schools, as well as programs designed to acquaint teachers with new ideas and curriculum. Parents wishing to observe these programs will find them on CKPR-Tv as follows:- one hour pro- grams from Il a.m. to 12 - half hour programs from 11.30 to 12 and all Saturday programs from 9.45 The empty Rec.Centre safe lies abandoned in the weetis after a break-in a couple of weeks ago. Mr.M.Didura of Schreiber is the winner of the Art Club painting which was raffled on Sept.24th. at the Recreation Centre. Mrs.Kay Thorsteinson made the draw. Se Canadians born in March 1899 should mail their application this month to be eligible to receive their first $75 old age security pension cheque in April 1967. Application forms are available in post offices and should be mailed to the regional director of old age security in the province where they are living. With the hunting season for grouse and waterfowl on September 15, hunters are reminded of Section 22 of the Game and Fish Act. This section states that in a locality that game usually inhabits or is usually found, no person shall have a firearm in his} possession, unless it is unloaded and encased, be- tween 1/2 hr.after sunset and 1/2 before sunrise. See page seven of this issue for the announcement of another great 'HYDRO SPECIAL' when Ontario Hydro, municipal hydro utilities and ourselves will take part in another great promotion.
