Page 12 AN OPINION ON INDIANS IN CANADA - as express by Tom Gerow - a Grade 10 Student. In my opinion nothing can be done to help the Indians unless they themselves want to be helped. | am not condemning all Indians, | just say that Indians who want off the reservations and want to get to better living condition do so in most cases. But, th ere are also lots of these people who are lazy and shiftless, who want only to stay on the reserva- tion to collect their monthly money from the Govern- ment. These few enjoy being drunk and dirty all the time, and it is this select few that the main populus of the people see, and therefore they condemn them all. Our best bet is to cut out giving them money and get them off the reservations. MORE ON INDIANS - by Molly Harris, Grade 1] As in the United States, Canada has a segrega- tion problem. In the U.S. it is the negroes and in Canada, the Indians. They are common people just like you and|. Sure, some of their ways of living may be different--they should still be treated the same. Today's Indians are the main topic of any conver- s ation concerning races of people. They are looked down on--scorned upon as being almost equal to animals. Their lives are interrupted by the public in their protests and other inhuman actions. When seen anywhere outside their own homes they are made public spectacles of. Because they are treated this way they try to mimic the white man. One of these wrongs is the consumption of alcohol Since they have seen the white man polluted with alcohol, they have come to the conclusion that this is the normal thing to do. Now they literally make liquor their stable diets! | think that such things as are taking place a- gainst this race of people are disgusting and that something shauld be done about it. | often wonder if it has ever occurred to any of these people or groups who think they are helping the Indians, that maybe these people want to live in their own ways--not in the way of the white man. How would we like to change our society into that of the Indians? BAD DRIVING HABITS REVEAL THE DONKEY AT THE WHEEL You know about the 'tiger in the tank' but do you know the 'donkey at the wheel'? He's always the other guy, the one who races through stop lights, takes chances on crowded highways, changes direc- tion without signalling, slows up in a fast-moving traffic to look at the blonde going by or to watch the gory details of an accident. It doesn't concern | him if his antics cause an accident. Let the others watch out for themselves. If you are still with 1s do you feel twinges of 1 guilt? Or do you still think the "Donkey" at the wheel is always the other guy? THE NEWS x May 26, 1966 T.B. It takes an hour to hold a safety meeting. It takes a week to plan a safety program. It takes a month to put it into operation. It takes a year to win a safety award. It takes a lifetime to make a safe worker. It takes one second to destroy it all with one accident.
