Vol.6, No.1] /2 Highschool Carnival Queen Marcia Hamilton and King Ted Brown, Jr. Photo D.Whitley HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS FIRST SNOW CARNIVAL The stamina and adaptability of of Terrace Bay teenagers was well demonstrated during the first Winter Snow Carnival held at the High School on the afternoon of Friday, March I8th. Despite a progressive thaw, fog and steady rain, the students carried out their original plans with gusto, verve and enthusiasm. Divided into their four house leagues they tobogganed, played volleyball and "slush" (grass) hockey under conditions more suited to water polo or wading. Moving inside to the auditorium they engaged in more strenuous activities--races, games and several powerful tugs-or-war. During these events the judging of ice sculptures was carried out. The entries were two monstrous figures, Yo-Yo and Debilman, an igloo, and a model of the school building. Mrs.Audrey Ferguson and Mrs. Jewel Scott selected the figure of Yo-Yo, built by Pat Simmer and George Dashkewytch's group, as win- ner. Another event which was received with great de- light by the onlookers was a pie-eating contest in which there were three entrants. George Dashke- wytch ate his way to victory in record time. Later in the afternoon a Badminton match was staged. The team led by Jill Cr andlemire and Ken Wood was the overall winners. Dancing to the Bee-Jays rounded out the day and during the evening winners of the King and Queen contest were announced. Perhaps the uncertain weather on Thursday and Friday contributed to fewer entries than expected but those who took part found the skiing excellent. Both downhill and slalom races were held in Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. The events and first, second and third place win- ners were:~ Junior Boys - Downhill, Billy Megraw - Slalom, Billy Megraw and Combined, Billy Megraw. Junior Girls - Downhill, Pat Megraw, Sheila St. Louis, Maureen MacDonald - Slalom, Pat Megraw, Sheila St.Louis and Maureen MacDonald - Combin- ed, Pat Megraw. Intermediate Boys - Downhill, Bevin Black, Stan Megraw, Hugh Geary - Slalom, Bevin Black, Graham Coe, Hugh Geary - Combined Bevin Black. Intermediate Girls - Downhill, Joan Persson, Marilyn MacDonald, Donna Chapman - Slalom, Joan Persson, Marilyn MacDonald, Donna Chapman - Combined, Joan Persson. Senior Men - Downhill - Lyle Nicol, Bevin Black, Stan Megraw - Slalom, Lyle Nicol, Bevin Black, Stan Megraw - Combined - Lyle Nicol. The Senior events were open to all contestants. The races proved to be very interesting and the spectators who attended were not disappointed. Jack Chapman and Carl Rose acted as timekeeper and recorder. The last few weeks bring some of the best skiing conditions and it is expected that all who are interested will be out to enjoy the slopes.
