School teacher Ron Lanigan spent the weekend at the Lakehead. Mrs.Edith Hubelit, Mrs.Marie Rousseau and Mrs. Metty Foreman took the prizes this week at the Five Hundred Club game on Tuesday evening. Mrs. Prina Gerow was hostess. Refreshments were served. ALTAR SOCIETY MEETS On Thursday evening members of St.Berchman's Altar Society met at Mrs.E.Hubelit's home for the February meeting. Vice-president, Mrs.Schelling, chaired the meeting. It was moved that a sub stantial payment be made on the church windows. The money jar was in cir- culation and several articles of sewing and novel- ties were handed in for penny auction prizes. Following closing prayers a Valentine luncheon was enjoyed. In the photo below, taken by Mrs .C .Todesco of Rossport, Harry Tymco of Gurney is shown with the pelts of some of the wolves, fox, lynx and bears he has shot or trapped near his store at Gurney. Bears frequently look in windows or raid garbage cans. Lynx are often heard screaming from nearby tree tops. Mr.Tymco spends his spare time in winter fashioning chairs, tables and novelties from moose and deer antlers, sea shells and stones. He has several mounted birds of species native to the district. SCHREIBER COUNCIL MEETING Sixty-seven thousand dollars in back taxes was the prime concern of the municipal council at their regu- lar February meeting. One more appeal will be made to whose delinquent in taxes, suggesting they go to the town office with proposal of set payments of some sort, and if this offer is not accepted council will be compelled to enter garnishees and put cer- tain properties on a tax sale. It was agreed to continue in the Port Arthur and District Health Unit but councillor J.M.McGrath was adamant in insisting Schreiber have its own representative as do others in the unit. There are six meetingsa year paid for by the unit. The question of the YMCA unpaid business tax evoked a lengthy discussion since apparently the crux of the matter evolves upon the supposition that the association is a benevolent one, by which it is assumed to be a non-profit organization. This, it was felt, was not the case in Schreiber. The annual report of the volunteer fire brigade was approved: 13 fire calls answered; 35 practices held; Walter Zaporzan appointed deputy fire chief; Ed .Borutski appointed secretary-treasurer; 400 ft .of 1 1/2 in.hose and 200 ft.of 2 in.hose purchased; an adapter is on order and the pumper truck has been equipp ed with a booster brake which is most satis- factory. The brigade recommends purchase of some extinguishers and that a member be sent to Fire Col- lege. No school drills were held during the past year. Councillor Spadoni suggested dry chemical equipment be placed on the fire truck. Councillor Guina insisted that, in answer to public inquiries, note be inserted in the minutes that the recent $3 an hour quoted as road supt .E. Borutski's salary is not an increase but included fringe benefits while Mr.Borutski remains on an annual salary basis. A refund to the ice committee for rental of hall was made, contingent on statement for same. P.J.Guina and alternate R.B.Spadoni were named to represent council on the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Children's Aid committee. A request from the Canadian Back Packer's Assoc. for land in Schreiber as a headquarters interested council and R.B.Spadoni will secure brochures giv- ing information to tourists on this area. The CP*&T committee of the Rebekah & Oddfellow Lodges was granted permission to use the room in the town hall temporarily until other arrangements can be made. It was agreed again that the council chamber is reserved strictly for town business. An invitation will be issued to Terrace Bay Coun- cil to a challenge bonspiel and social evening. Membership in the Thunder Bay Municipal League was renewed as were subscriptions to the Municipal World but all other renewals and donations to chari- table organizations were tabled until the budget is made up. Cosimo Commisso's application for tax rebate was set aside with notification that it will have to be brought up at court of revision. Mr .McGrath was asked to draft a new by-law re- garding water services and collections.
