Page I0 @ RECREATION FLYER - by Buck It's all over for another year! and in the minds of many people the Festival was a huge success. This event has proven that it is here to stay as an annual celebration, and each year we can expect bigger and better things. The Teen group has once again shown that they are good organizers and have good capabilities in leadership. In more ways than one, they have captured the hearts of the people of Ter- race Bay. On their behalf, we thank all the adults who sup- ported this Snow Festival and helped to achieve this SUCCESS . It is hardly a week past yet and already sugges- tions are coming in with regard to next year's plan- ning. These are most welcome and indicate a healthy interest in this Festival. MINOR HOCKEY Our local Bantam hockey team, under the guidance of Gale Savoy, is starting to look like a real cham- pionship club. After a convincing 15-4 win over Schreiber Bantams, the future looks very good. Playoffs have been arranged for the Western Zone pf the North Shore Minor Hockey Association. Our local Bantams will square off in the best of three series with the Schreiber Bantams, starting next week and the winner will meet the successful team from the series between Red Rock and Nipigon. The finals have been set for March I9 in Manitou- wadge and we hope our team is able to go all the way. In the PeeWee classification, Terrace Bay will host the PeeWee hockey Tournament for the Western Zone championship on Saturday, March. 5th. Teams representing Red Rock, Nipigon, Schreiber and Ter- race Bay, will battle it out for North Shore suprem- acy. All four teams in our PeeWee House League are sporting new sweaters. This is another first for the Terrace Bay Minor Hockey Association. Playoffs in our local House League will commence during the last week of March. Tentative plans have been drawn for a Minor Hockey Banquet early in May and a good response has been received through one of the brewing firms in obtaining a guest speaker. From all indications Maurice (The Rocket) Richard will be guest speaker for the banquet. This should be a big event for our Minor Hockey players as well as for the many avid Montreal Canadiens hockey fans. This is one year we can definitely assure the Minor Hockey Players there will be a banquet. Speaking of banquets...the Boy Scout Association Father. and Son Banquet has been planned and they hope to obtain either Dick Shatto, Toronto Argonaut football star or Marcel Pronovost, NHL hockey play- er, to attend as guest speaker. This banquet is expected to take place early in April. The Wind-up for the season will be a Bantam Hockey Tournament during Easter week, starting on April 12 through until the I6th. The Terrace Bay Minor Hockey Association has finalized plans for this tournament. Invitations have been sent to the following communities: Manitouwadge, Marathon, Schreiber, Red Rock, Nipigon and Geraldton. We THE NEWS February 17, 1966 have already received confirmation from a Bantam hockey club in Winnipeg that were last year's Man- itoba Bantam "A" champions, that they plan to attend. This team is coached by the popular Winni- peg Tribune sports editor, Vince Leah. He will be bringing with him fifteen boys, plus five lady chape- rones who are mothers of boys playing hockey. This tournament will be somewhat different from other hockey tournaments as it will be based on the total accumulation of points. Winnipeg and Terrace Bay teams will compete in other events, such as bowling, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, etc. The Winnipeg team will stay here for four days and we are asking you well in advance for billet- ing for these young hockey players. This type of tournament would also mean that any boys fourteen years of age and under who do not play hockey will also be eligible to participate in the other events as mentioned. The Recreation Director has had the opportunity of hosting this same team in previous years and found them to be very well-mannered boys and quite friendly, and believes our local boys would enjoy the fellowship offered. Our two Atom hockey teams, coached by L.Le- gault, made their initial appearance in organized hockey at the Schreiber Minor Hockey Day and went down to defeat in both games, although they were outclassed by older boys. To the Atom hockey players, being able to play against Schreiber boys was a great thrill as this was the first time they had played against an outside team. JUNIOR AND SENIOR HOCKEY The Schreiber-Terrace Bay JUNIORS have clinch- ed first place in the Northwestern Junior Hockey League, well ahead of Geraldton, their closest rivals. Semi-finals have started this week, with Geraldton playing Nip-Rock Rangers, the winners to meet Schreiber-Terrace Bay Juniors in finals. Final statistics have not been compiled as yet, but it looks like a neck and neck race between Billy Stachiw and Jack Byerley from Geraldton to win the scoring championship. In weekend games, Schreiber-Terrace Bay swamped Nip-Rock Rangers 6 - 2 and I7 - 3. We can expect to see the next Junior game 'in the finals series in Terrace Bay next week. Also, on tap for February 23rd, the Marathon Mercuries will meet the Red Rock Royals in the last home game of the season here in Terrace Bay. ART CLUB DRAWING COURSE Through the combined efforts of the Terrace Bay Art Club, Community Programmes Branch and the Terrace Bay Recreation Association, a weekend drawing course will take place at the Recreation Centre in the Adult Study Lounge this weekend. We have received a good number of registrations from out of town and we are anticipating as large a turn- out of local people. There is still time to register... call the Recreation Office. RECREATION COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS The following people have been appointed to serve on the Recreation Committee: Benny Hayes (chairman) - Ted Brown (vice-chairman) - Mrs.M. continued p. II
