« February 3, 1966 THE PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST HELD Knights of Columbus, St.Edward's Council, 3554, held their annual public speaking contest for stu- Rock High Schools. The contest was held in the Schreiber High School auditorium and Sanford Chicoine, Grand Knight, welcomed the audience, explaining the contest is one phase of K of C youth activities sponsored yearly. In the senior division Gordon Moorey of Schrei- ber placed first, his topic Canadian Citizenship. Deborah Stewart of Terrace Bay came second with the topic Conformity vs Individuality. Winner of the Junior Division was Beverley Be- rube of Nipigon speaking on Drug Addiction. Plac- ing second was Lois Ann Fraser of Terrace Bay who spoke on Vietniks. Other junior winners were Christine Climie of Red Rock and George Dashkewytch of Terrace Bay. Other senior speakers were Mary Lou Karns and thon and Keith Koski of Terrace Bay. Judges for the contest were Rev. D.F.Muldrew, D.E.Smith and Sister Majella, all-of Schreiber . E.E.Forgues, Schreiber High School principal in- troduced the speakers and E.Ashe of the staff was timer. Gordon Moorey and Beverley Berube each re- ceived a large trophy and a miniature one for them- selves. They also received other gifts. P.J.Giina Deputy Grand Knight and Albert Cadieux of Ter- race Bay, District Deputy Grand Knight, made presentations to all contestants. Diane Rummery was pianist for the occasion and the school choir, under her direction, sang two selections. Mr .Forgues warmly commended the Council for their interest as these contests are of great benefit to the students since public speaking is an impor- tant part of the school curriculum. Lunch was served by members of the home and school association. JOANNE MORRIS WEDS WAYNE PEAREN Marriage vows were pledged between Joanne Christina Morris and Wayne Glen Pearen at a re- cent ceremony conducted by Rev. R.A.Peden in the Chapel of Trinity United Church, Port Arthur. The bride is the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.John Morris, Schreiber and the bridegroom is the son of Mr.and Mrs. G.L.Pearen of 'Terrace Bay. Given in marriage by her father the bride wore a two piece suit of pink lace with black accessories and her corsage was of sweetheart roses. Miss Darlene Pearen, sister of the groom,was bridesmaid and wore a white and green lace dress, her acces- sories were white and her corsage was pink roses. Mrs.Morris, the bride's mother, was in a suit of green wool with accessories in brown and her cor- sage was pink roses. The groom's mother wore a gown of beige brocade with accessories in beige dents of Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Nip- Cora Spadoni of Schreiber, John Helliwell of Mara- Lawrence Abraham of Terrace Bay acted as best man. NEWS Page 14 and a corsage of bronze mums. At a wedding dinner for nineteen, held in the evening in the Shoreline Motor Hotel, a toast to the bride was proposed by John Cobey of Port Arthur. Among the guests were Rev. and Mrs. R.A.Peden, Mr.and Mrs. B.Pearen, Mr.and Mrs. J.Pearen, Lawrence Abraham, Edwin Harju, Mr. and Mrs. G.Morris, Mr.and Mrs. John Cobey and Brent Morris. BUSY BEES PLAN SALE The Busy Bees of St.John's Anglican Church held a meeting January 26 in the church hall when plans were made to hold a phone-in bake sale on Febru- ary 17. Cabbage rolls, b read, buns and pies will be featured. Plans for the annual Spring Hat Show were also discussed and a tentative date of March 19 was set. Mrs. P.R.Bailey chaired the meeting was served. and lunch Mrs.Norman McCuaig and Mrs.Ken Davis are at- tending the semi-annual meeting of the Ontario Tuberculosis Association in Toronto. C.W.L. MEETING (Continued...... five honorary members. Mrs.Bill Mullins said Christmas hampers had been distributed. Reporting for the Brownies and Guides Mrs. L.R.Tremblay said a joint enrolment ceremony had been held with five Brownies enrolled. Two proficiency badges were presented and service stars were given to Brownie leaders. In her radio and TV report Mrs.Ed Borutski read a letter from radio station CKPR stating there will be a small charge for the weekly program of movie ratings sent. Mrs.Alec Power reported on visits to the sick. Members. agreed to a bakeless bake sale, the mon- ey to be handed in by February |5. The president thanked Mrs.Arthur Moorey and her group for cleaning the kitchen. Following adjournment a Christmas party was held when Mrs.Con Duggan played Santa Claus for the exchange of gifts distribution. A skit was presented by Mrs.Bernard Paradis, Mrs.Hobden Spikula, Mrs.Ted Morrow and Mrs .R.B.Spadoni and other members playe d a swinging rhythm band number . CARD OF THANKS = Mr.and Mrs.Lester McCuaig wish to offer their deep gratitude to all those who made Mr .McCuaig's retirement from the C.P.R. service such a happy occasion: their immediate family, other relations, friends, the train crews and other personnel who extended a host of good wishes in so many varied ways.
