James Turner, Padre of Branch 5 Royal Canadian Legion, was the guest speaker at the Schreiber veterans' banquet, one of the most suc- cessful with over ninety attending the dinner. David Gunter, Legion President, introduced the honored guests Reeve F.V.Harness, Howard Solly, Pres. Terrace Bay Legion, A. McKechnie, Sea Cadet Leader, A. Speziale, Army Cadet Leader, L. Hiller, Zone Commander, Cpl. Duncan, O.P.P., Chief S. Timmerman. Mr. Gunter said this was the first time there had been formal representation from the various local police forces and the Sea Cadets. A highlight of the event was the presentation by Reeve Harness of deeds to the property long sought by the Legion as additional grounds for their building. Rev. Turner, former Branch 109 Padre, spoke with deep affection of his stay in Schreiber, his first parish in Canada, the birthplace of his sons and the warmth of the welcome given him then and on each return. Schreiber people and their affairs would always be of interest to him he said. He described the Book of Remembrance he had recently dedicated in Pt. Arthur, and said that Remembrance Day should be a pilgrimage to the throne of sacrifice. War has been described as negative, futile and stupid and, too often because it is easier for us, Remembrance Day becomes a time of nostalgia rather than a memorial when painful memories are awakened. We must develop and pro- pagate the Brotherhood of Peace in the world and inculcate ideals to strive for. McCuaig) HIGH SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOC. MEET The High School Home and School Association held its regular meeting on November 8th with a large crowd attending. Mrs. R.B. Spadoni presided. Mrs. D. McGuire read a letter from the local Lions Club asking support in pressing the Town Council for better arrangements at crossings used by school children in the south end of town. After some dis- cussion, it was agreed to do this with a definite sug- gestion that school crossing signs or pedestrian cross- walk signs be placed at the hazardous points. Mrs. N.. McCuaig volunteered to act as member- ship convenor and Mrs. E. Lang as lunch convenor. An order was passed to purchase tea towels, a cream and sugar set and a can opener for the school cup- boards.
