COUNCIL QUOTES Councillor Verl Thompson detailed his report to Council of the Municipal League meeting he had attended in Nipigon with Reeve W. Adamo, and stressed the value of representation at these meetings. With relation to the District Home for the Aged, or, as of now, Homes for the Aged, they realized with belated hindsight they would have been wise to join with Fort William some four years ago. However faced with the present situation Terrace Bay had been working with the other com- munities indignant over the inequality of their higher assessment; Red Rock, Marathon and Manitouwadge. As these three communities were still Improvement Districts and could not fight their position it remained for Terrace Bay to seek legal advice. Asked to select a spot for the location of a District Home for the Aged, Terrace Bay had re- fused to take part. However, the outcome had been tied with Nipigon, Geraldton and Fort William and it appeared those three had become the selected locations for three District Homes for the Aged. Though Nipigon's Reeve refused to explain figures, it was estimated by Councillor Thompson the original cost had gone up from one million two hundred thousand to approximately two million dollars. "We cannot, it seems, change the way they are assessing us, but why three," Councillor Thompson queried. No one is as converse on the subject as Nipigon's Reeve, yet under questioning he would not bring them up to date on the figures, stating it was the same as military figures. Council lor Thompson felt if they could get just one home they could save at least fifty thousand dollars on the overall plan. Reeve Waghorn has stated they have architects working on all three homes complete for two hundred and fifty beds. There could be every possibility there would not be someone in all three homes at one time and Reeves Pressman and Waghorn are pushing it down their throats to the tune of Forty Thousand Dollars a year. With regard to the location, Council members agreed with the Reeve and Councillor Thompson: that in this day and age with Old Age Government and Company pension plans there was not the need for a Home for the Aged, particularly in younger towns, as there might be eventually for a Nursing Home. Neither Nipigon or Geraldton were capable of giving the required nursing care. Small hospitals and staffs were in each town but most emergencies would have to be rushed to the Lakehead for treat- ment. Further Councillor Thompson contended if October 7, 1965 CLERK'S NOTICE OF FIRST POSTING: OF VOTERS' LIST Form 4, Section | VOTERS! LIST 1965, TOWNSHIP OF TERRACE BAY, DISTRICT OF THUNDER BAY.
