April 8, 1965 FLAG RAISING (Continued from page | and rose to its new and permanent position as the Terrace Bay Band, accompanied the spectators in singing 'O.Canada." Chaplain of the Naval Re- serve, Reg. T.G.Husser spoke of the new flag as a fitting symbol of our. past and representative of G@ new coming of age. Chairman of the Flag-Raising Committee, Coun- cillor W.E.Cavanaugh informed those present this was the third Canadian flag under which he had lived, and how proud and thankful he was to have been spared to witness this historic day. He could recall vividly, he said, when he was the age of the school children in the audience, and each spring they would gather in the school yard to raise the Union Jack while singing 'O Canada' and 'God Save the King'. Those days had instilled a wonderful feeling of pride of loyalty and secutiry. It was after the First World War that the Union Jack gradually gave way to the Red Ensign. The great Depression of the 1930's was soon upon them and the very survival of most of the people gave no time for thought of flag or country with the result that by the time the Second World War came along, Canadians as such, had practically lost their iden- tity. The. great honor our Navy, Army pnd Air Force brought to C anada in that war, the prestige of our Prime Minister, sitting in on War Councils with Prime Minister Churchill and President Roosevelt, the wonderful post-war expansion along with the world wide image Canada gained at the United Nations and other world gatherings, all added up to again make them realize the wonderful potential of this Country. Councillor Cavanaugh continued that he thought he had witnessed everything in the line of progress in his 'lifetime, but with the revolution taking place today in ed i A '65 Renault It Seems... AT Anford's space travel and practically every phase of daily living, he could not help but envy the younger people present for the future he could visualize for them. He admonished them, however, to be alert to what was right and wrong, and to let their voices be heard. He exhorted them with all sincerity to hold high this wonderful new Maple Leaf Flag and, cherishing it always, understand it stands for this wonderful land A special guest of the occasion was Mayor Ernest Reed of Fort William who paid his personal tribute to the people of this community for the organization and support accorded the Flag Raising Cdremony. This was indeed an act of loyalty. He felt the chifd-- ren present would soon learn to respect, honor and revere this Flag, having played a significant part in the ceremony. Referring to the suggestion of a divided country he quoted a story of Abraham Lin- coln which closed by stating 'This nation will not be divided' and he too, felt this statement would always Phone 3327 Mayor Reed closed by say- ing though we shed a tear at the lowering of the old flag, still all joined in to cheer at the raising of the new for this Land, our C mada, whic we love so much.
