1965 January 28, GUIDE-BROWNIE ASSOCIATION MEETING Commissioner of Aguasabon District, Mrs. Shirley Mikus chaired the annual meeting Monday evening of the Local Association to Guides and Brownies held in the Recreation Centre. Reporting first as District Commissioner, Mrs .Miku listed 101 Guides and Brownies in Terrace Bay. En- rolment had dropped considerabl y due to the lack of trained leaders this past year. No recruits were accepted while Guiders were being trained. At present there are nine warranted Guiders and train- ing sessions were conducted by Mrs.Lois Downey and Mrs.Mikus of Blue and Brown Guiders respec- tively. The most notable change in Guiding is the uniform which must be completed by March 1967. Other changes are being instituted in test work and the addition of 'and Country' to the promise. Commenc- ing September girls will be accepted into Brownies at the age of seven and leave at ten or no later than eleven; Guides beginning at ten and leaving at fourteen, no later than fifteen, this to be at the discretion of the leaders who judge the maturity of the girls. Rangers may be started at fourteen and leave at eighteen. Organization of Rangers here would be to maintain the girls interested, allowing them to participate in the program offered in advanced Guiding. One lady had expressed interest in this group and it was hoped at least one more would volunteer in order to organize a Company. As District Commissioner Mrs.Mikus attended Mother and Daughter Banquet's, Church Parades, held training sessions for leaders, attended training sessions at Polly Lake, Fort William and in Terrace Bay and attended a District Conference in Nipigon. Of particular pleasure as Commissioner was her attendance at the Gold Cord Ceremony for Bonnie Hamilton. Thirty-six girls attended Camp last summer, notably the eight Brownies who were the first to go to a Brownie camp from here. Three Guides had been successful in earning their Pioneer Badge after Pioneer Camp and Guider Pat Downey had gone to Pioneer Camp at Doe Lake. During the year the Guides donated to the May Badanai International Bursary and Brownies collected nylons for the Rehabilitation .Centre. They were visited by Mrs.Gunn, Provincial Area Commissioner and Thinking Day ceremonies were held by both Guides and Brownies. Mrs.Mikus thanked the individual workers who had contributed many hours of effort to Guiding and closed with a report on Local Association meetings held monthly at the homes of niembers, supporting the Guide Association. Secretary Mrs.Betty Turner gave the regular and annual minutes and Mrs.Alice Farrow presented the financial statement. The resignation of Mrs.Gladys Sitch as Brown Owl of Pack Two was accepted with regret and the Association was grateful to Mrs. Jeannine Desrosier for accepting this Pack. "We're already getting queries at our office from people who haven't received their returns, " said Mr.Mann. "Some think that because they haven't been mailed a form they don't have to file. I'm sorry to dash their hopes-=but they do. Anyone who doesn't receive a 'Personalized' tax return can get a blank unlabelled return at his local post office. Also, if a person loses his 'Personalized' return, he can get a blank form from his post office." GET THOSE LICENSES NOW We remind district owners of passenger and dual purpose vehicles and motorcycles that the deadline for purchase of 1965 lic ense plates is February 28 and that there will be no extension. Sale of licenses in this district has been slow and it is expected that many will find they have to wait in line at the last minute rush.
