J. BEDDARD HEADS SCHOOL BOARD KIWANIS At the inaugural meeting of the Terrace Bay School Board held in the Public School on Thursday evening J.Beddard was elected Chairman for the year 1965. Mr. J.Shivas was elected Vice-Chairman for the year and W.Hanley was re-appointed Secretary- Treasurer of the Board. The committees for 1965, as suggested by Mr. Bed- dard are as follows:- Maintenance, School Properties - Mr. T.Dorland. Publicity, Curriculum, Non-Category Courses - Mrs. 1. Marsh. Teaching Staff, Personnel, Recruiting - Mrs.D. Koski. Finance - Mr. J.Shivas. The Secretary-Treasurer administered the Declara- tion of Office and Oaths of Allegiance to all members of the Board. | The next regular meeting of the Board will be held at the Public School on Tuesday, January I9th. CELEBRATE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY On Thursday , January 21, 1965, Kiwanis Clubs in hundreds of cities and towns will commemorate the 50th Golden Anniversary of Kiwanis International . Our social scene has witnessed many changes since January 21, 1915 when the first Kiwanis Club was born in Detroit and Kiwanis, woven into that fabric of a changing society, has strengthened it and made it more durable with the many threads of community service...all part of the unchanging pattern of freedom and responsibility of the individual . The Golden Anniversary will see some 265,000 members in fifteen natibns of the free world joining together to thank their host communities for the opportunity of serving in the past and to pledge con- tinued service in the future. A special Anniversary Night meeting was held at the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel with John Ferrier, J.P.Heenan, A.Fraser and L.Crandlemire as special guests. At this meeting President Bob Hales announc- ed that the following projects are being undertaken by the Terrace Bay Kiwanis Club Inc., to commem- orate the 50th Golden Anniversary at Terrace Bay:- New Year's Award to pa rents of the New Year Baby. Sponsoring a concert by the Lakehead Symphony Orchestra in March. Provide a welcome buffet for . new Canadians at Mayor Ernie Reed's Citizen's Court. Complete improvement of Kiwanis Lake Superior Park. Award prizes to the Horticultural Society for Junior Gardener Award and Window Box Displays. Maintain Kiwanis Flower Boxes in our business district. Sponsor a bird house building con- test. Distribute the folder "Our Forests Are Burning" to all families. Work with the Inter-Faith group to promote better understanding between different religious faiths. Invite visiting missionaries and local clergy to a Kiwanis Dinner meeting. Provide flowers for a special Church Service. Run a Winter Kiddies Karnival. Scotch tape children's bicycles for protection on the highway. Sponsor a Halloween Party for teen-agers. Provide proficiency awards to honor students in all three schools. Bring in Sten ger Shows and Midway for the children. Give assistance to Minor Hockey.. Assist the children's Traffic Patrol. Provide Christmas hampers. Sponsor a Christmas Sparkle Contest in (Continued page 8) PROJECTS CONSIDERED BY TOWN COUNCIL Inaugurated into office at a brief session Monday by Very Rev.Dean E.A.Gallagher, the Terrace Bay Council began its first business meeting Tuesday after- noon in the Municipal offices. Reeve W.Adamo designated his committees for 1965 as: Utilities (Hydro chairman W.Adamo with C.Kolody, Municipal Per- sonnel - Public Relations, chairman W.E.Cavanaugh with V.Thompson - Police, Public Works, Roads, Water and Sanitation, chairman E.R.Brown with W.E. Cavanaugh,.. - Town Planning, Centennial, Parks, Public Health, Welfare, Liason with Chamber of Commerce chairman W.E.Cavanaugh with E.R. Brown, Recreation chairman V.Thompson with W.E.Cavan- augh - Fire Department chairman C .Kolody with V. Thompson. A letter from Mr.J.Ferrier to the Supervisor of Water Works with regard to the disposition of respon- sibility of the water supply was read to Council. Councillor Thompson recognized this should be the responsibility of the Township or Medical Officer of Health, and they had been assured by their M.O.H. that the count was quite adequate for Lake Superior water. Spadoni Brothers acknowledged receipt of order for a G.M.Utilities truck, promising delivery within five weeks. Council reviewed correspondence on a re- quest for a Fourth Division Court deciding to have Secretary W.F .Strutt make further inquiries. {| Mr.A.Chisholm was re-appointed by Council for a three year term to the High School Board, expiring
