HOCKEY - BEAVERS AND MERCURIES SUNDAY The Fort William Beavers make their first visit of the season to the Terrace Bay Arena this SUNDAY AFTERNOON, for a game against the Marathon Mercuries. Game time is 1:00 P.M. With two wins, two ties and only one loss to date in their first five outings, the Mercs have proved © more than a match for the other Senior entries and could well be the Thunder Bay representatives on the Allen Cup trail next spring. Be sure to get out to see them play. Another incentive for the Senior players is that an All-Star team will be chosen to meet the Russian "A" club at Fort William on December I5th, and everyone will be after a spot on that squad. COUNCIL QUOTES Council, at Tuesday's meeting, passed a resolution in which they recommended to the Post Office Dept. that the local Post Office Lobby remain open on holidays excepting Christmas and New Years, up to 6 P.M., and that all first class mail and daily news- papers be sorted on those days. In presenting the resolution, Councillor Cavanaugh remarked it did not appear to be a local issue, but had to be direct- ed to the District Director of Post Services in North Bay. In an isolated community with daily news a day old on immediate delivery, it seemed unreason- able for a greater delay. Reeve Heenan outlined correspondence and dis- cussions on the proposed Home for the Aged for this district. Council agreed with the Reeve they were not well enough acquainted with the facts and strongly recommended a representation from Council at the Nipigon meeting, December 4th. Councillor Cavanaugh inquired about patrolling the Mill road at this time of year. It was pointed out th at this was the one specific duty required and it was particularly essential to avoid this traffic build up in the winter months. lt was recommended by the Reeve fhat renova- tions to the Police Office be left to the incoming Council. Councillor Fraser felt the main drive shoul be on a new and permanent office. Presenting his findings on the snowblowers inves- tigated and demonstrated, Councillor Brown's recommendation to purchase a unit from a local agent met with council approval. A motion was thereby passed to purchase a Snowblower unit 4 HP. 24 inch at $370.76 (this unit for us e around the Recreation Centre and hydrants. Inquiries about the curfew by Councillor Thompson found a most favorable reception. His suggestion for the use of a whistle or siren to signal curfew was not feasible with shift workers. He then recommen- ded public notice of curfew enforcement until the town became well acquainted with it. November accounts for Recreation $5,053.10 and Snack Bar $4,021.24 were passed for payment. A motion authorizing advances to the Recreation Association and an adjustment in accounting from the Snack Bar to the Recreation were passed.
