Ve empe 96 a UNITED CHURCH WOMEN MEET Mrs. R. ©. Macadam presided for the December meeting of the United Church Women with Mrs. G. McBride taking the religious period. Mrs. ©. Laine reported on dinners and Mrs. A. Gordon on the recent Christmas tea, both thanking those who assisted. Mrs. Laine also re- ported on supplies bought for the kitchen cupboards and Mrs. G. Etches gave a lengthy account of cards, flowers and gifts bought. Mrs. McBride gave the Manse report and Mrs. F. Macadam, Sewing Convenor, thanked the members for gene~ rous contributions to the sewing booth at the recent bazaar which had made it an outstanding success. Mrs. W. Clemens, Secretary, gave the annual press and publicity report and also read a lengthy file of correspondence: - letters from several paper manufacturing firms stating they do not provide catalogues, dealing through wholesalers and not to individuals; a letter from W. R. Burroughs, for the. Board of Stewards, acknowledging a cheque from the U.C.W.,; an appreciative note from the Bible Society for a donation; a reminder from the Supe- rior Presbytery U.C.W. secretary, Mrs. F. William son, that all officers' and chairmen's reports must be made in triplicate; notice from the Superior Pres bytery of the allocation for Schreiber which was accepted on motion. A letter from James Edson of the Prairie Christian Training Centre was received with a brochure describing the many changes being made there - a donation was made to this work. Mrs. Macadam reported a lengthy letter from Mrs. Crook giving good wishes to the U.C.W. members and describing their new home and work. The next regular meeting Falls on January Ist and the date was changed to January 3rd. This will begin with a potluck supper at 6.30 P.M. to be followed by the business meeting and a social evening. Members were asked to bring a gift and a game prize. Mrs. ©. Niemi presented a slate of officers for thie new year and Mrs. F. Fummerton took the chair for nominations from the floor. Officers elected were Mrs. T. P. Whent, President; Mrs. A. Gordon, Ist Vice-Pres; Mrs. W. Duncan, 2nd Vice-Pres; Mrs. O. Laine, Sec; Mrs. W. Thrower, Treas. A vote of appreciation was given the out- going officers and Mrs. Macadam thanked the members most sincerely for their support during her term as President. The new slate will be installed at the January meeting. Cost of membership pins will be inquired into. Following the meeting a round of carols was sung by Mesdames J. Gray, A. Gordon, W. Cringle and E. Holmes, accompanied by Mrs. L. McCuaig. Neen ee ee ERR L.A. TO CANADIAN LEGION WILL HOLD TEA The Ladies' Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion will hold a silver collection tea on -Monday, December 9th, in the Legion Hall. This will give the public an opportuni ty to see the renovations just completed in the greatly enlarged building. iN t\ SOCIAL & PERSONAL Capt. Allan F. Nelson of Edmonton spent a few days with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. A. E. Nelson, on his return from R.M.C. in Kingston where he was successful in writing his Captain to Major ~ examination. Mrs. Carrie Weaver returned home last week from Terrace Bay Hospital. Her son and his wife, Mr. & Mrs. "Pidge" Weaver are making their home with her. Jack also returned home from Terrace Bay last week. Mrs. Mark Doig of Trenton was the guest of Mrs. N. McCuaig last week. Mrs. E. Gerow will leave this week to spend Christmas with Mr. & Mrs. Perry Hewson in Toronto. Mrs. L. O'Brien and Mary Lynn spent the week- end in Sudbury with Mr. & Mrs. D. McDonald. Mrs. Polly Bottomley was taken by ambulance to McKellar Hospital, accompanied by her daughter~ in-law, Mrs. Neil Bottomley. The C.G.1.T. will present their annual Vesper Candle Lighting Service at 7.00 P.M. the same day. On Thursday, December 19th, the Sunday School Pageant and Concert will be held in the Town Hall at 7.00 P.M. Parents and interested friends are invited to attend. On Sunday, December 22nd, slides on the Holy Land will be shown at the 7.00 P.M. service. In Rossport, the annual Christmas Tree program will be held at 1.45 P.M. in the church repiacing ' the usual Gospel Mission Service.
