NEW HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED Many District residents, government officials, staff members, Dept. of Education officials, old graduates and students, attended the official opening on Saturday night of Schreiber's fine new $390,000.00 High School. The program opened with O Canada and Father J.M. Cano gave the Invocation. The Blessing was said by Rev. R.J.S. Inshaw and Board Chairman, A.G. Gordon, welcomed those present and spoke on the work done by the school. Township Reeve, W.E.D'Arcy and school Principal, O.B. Fasan, voiced their pleasure and satisfaction with the greatly improved facilities and the latter outlined some of the immediate plans for settling students in their new quarters. A former student, W.D.A. McCuaig, now a public school inspector for Cochrane District, com- pared the school to a prospector's claim - develope by the parents and placed the onus on the present generation to continue improvements for future needs. Vice-Chairman of the Board, L.R.McCuaig, spoke on the Progress of Education in Schreiber, paying tribute to the C.P.R. for their many past contributions to education in the town. Over the years, exploding school registration has neces- sitated classrooms outside existing buildings. The ice rink and old Methodist Church were pressed in- to service before the "old" school was enlarged in 1913. Around 1918, secondary school education in Schreiber was started through the efforts of the then Principal G.E. Evans. More rooms were added in 1924 and the continuation school was officially opened: Mr. McCuaig recalled the criticism and verbal abuse sometimes heaped upon the heads of the board at that time, who consisted of Jas. Lindsay, R.T. Moran and A.W. Struthers. He pointed out that graduates of the school have succeeded in many professions. The old building, built in 1903 and augmented by the new public school built in 1956, is again bulging at the seams and classes have been held in both upper and lower halls-and a church base- ment. After four years of negotiations with the Dept. of Education, approval was finally granted last year and tenders were called for the erection of the new High School - the one officially opened when board member, M.J. McGrath, cut the ribbon. The Hon. Geo. Wardrope brought greetings from both the present and former Minister of Education and mentioned his long and pleasant association with Schreiber and the fulfillment of years of endeavour with the opening of the (See Page 9) View of the auditorium of the new School LABOUR DAY MARRED BY ACCIDENT An accident, claiming the life of Philippe Morin of Schreiber, occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, September 2nd, near Cavers Road.
