Vol.5, No.29 LEGION TRACK AND FIELD CLINIC The travelling Legion Track and Field Clinic will hold courses every afternoon and evening this week at the High School track, Afternoon sessions will be outdoor - evening sessions will be in the Auditorium, These sessions are open only to those who have registered, and include athletes from Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Marathon and other North Shore points, ANY ADULT WHO IS INTERESTED IN LEARNING THE TECHNIQUES OF COACHING, IS WELCOME TO ATTEND AS AN ONLOOKER AT EITHER THE AFTER- NOON OR EVENING SESSIONS. It is hoped that many adults will take advantage of this opportunity and that following the Legion Clinic, when we attempt to organize our Fall Track and Field activities, we can count on assistance from these people, - _ FRIDAY AFTERNOON THE CLINIC WILL WIND UP WITH AN INFORMAL TRACK MEETING, FOLLOWED BY A CLOSING LUNCHEON FOR ALL ATHLETES, MINOR BASEBALL NEWS League' season play in all leagues has been completed, due to holidays, vacations, etc, Over the past few years, it has proved ne- cessary to finish the league at this time because of the uncertainty of turnouts, All- star teams will now be formed in the National League and the Bantam League, for competition with outside teams, Announcements of times and dates of all-star practices will appear shortly, after the completion of the Legion Track and Field Clinic this week, This year's minor baseball programme proved a tremendous success, but could have been even more so if we had been anle to ob- tain more assistance for coaching, umpiring , etc, Since there are more boys engaged in minor baseball in Terrace Bay than there are in minor hockey in the winter, it would .seem that volunteer assistance would be easier to find, but this has not proven so, Attempts to set up a Minor Baseball Association have not met with success, and unless this type of arrangement comes about in the near future | it will be impossible to expand the pro- gramme and to give the boys the assistance that they need, We will attempt to set up such an asso-~ ciation again next year, and it is sincerely hoped that we will receive more-support at. that time, MOOSE SEASONS ANNOUNCED Moose seasons for the next three years have been announced by the Honourable J.W. Spooner, Minister of Lands and Forests, The season as (Continued on Page 4) Serving the District in which we live July 12, 1962 THE FUTURE (EXCERPTS FROM THE CANADIAN IMPERIAL BANK OF COMMERCE NEWS LETTER) Both the pulp and paper and the lumber industries have lacked buoyancy in recent | years but their near term prospects have im- proved considerably following the lowering of the external value of the Canadian dollar, since a large proportion of both industry's production is exported, On the other hand, it should be kept in mind that both sectors of the forest based industries now have excess capacity which may well continue for a few years and competition is likely to remain extremely keen, Demand is growing rapidly, however, and it is only a matter of tine before additional facilities will be re- quired, Looking even further ahead there are two Significant developments taking place which could have far reaching effects on the Canadian forest products industries, Firstly, the United Kingdom has applied to join the European Economic Community and, although discussions are still under way, many well informed observers are of the opinion that she will eventually become a member, In the second place, the United States has announced its intention to seek a progressive re- duction of tariffs on a reciprocal basis on a wide range of manufactured goods, The formation of the European Common Market is not likely in itself to have a Significant effect on Canadats exports of forest based products but the situation will change dramatically should the United King- dom become a member, particularly if the Scandinavian countries (fellow members of the European Free Trade Association) follow her example, At the present time, Canadats ex- ports of newsprint, other papers, and lumber to the Common Market countries are in- Significant and only a modest quantity of Canadian wood pulp finds a market there. The import requirements of the European Economic Community are met from other European coun- tries which have an advantage in the form of lower transportation costs, Indeed, the bulk of Canada's exports of forest products are sold in the United States and most of the remainder in the United Kingdom, In order to trace the possible effects of the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Common Market, it is necessary to examine individually the major items in- volved, Canadian exports of newsprint to the United Kingdom have been increasing rapidly in recent years and in 1961 amounted to ap- proximately $60 million, They represent about two-fifths of the United Kingdom's re- quirements, the remainder being supplied . from Scandinavian sources, largely in the form of pulp which is processed by the United Kingdom manufacturers, (Continued on Page 4)
