Phone 126 Schreiber. i BAKE SALE - The Ladies Curling Club will spon sor a Bake Sale in the Curlihg Club Lounge on Saturday morning, February 14th, at 10.00 AM, EXECUTIVE FOR CANCER CAMPAIGN NAMED A group composed of Brian Kilpatrick, Field Secretary for the Canadian Cancer Soc- iety, Mr. Bev.Porter, Chairman of the Thunder Bay District Udit, Mrs, Harvey Johnston, Port Arthur Campaign Secretary, Mrs. Clarence Richmond, Secretary of the Port Arthur Unit and Mrs. Bernice Jones, Social Services Nurse from the Port Arthur Field Services, met with delegates from Marathon, Terrace Bay, Red Kock, Schreiber and Nipigon in the Hotel Terrace on Tuesday afternoon to organize separate Units for each of these places, During the afternoon the meeting moved to the Recreation Centre where, under the capable chairmanship of Bev.Porter, the dele- gates, together with other interested parties heard Mrs.Jones outline her services as a liason between the patient, the doctor and the Welfare Agencies. She stated at one point that there are approximately 300 cancer patients a year in Thunder Bay Diss trict, many of whom are indigen partially able to finance the cost of eadie and expensive illnesses Mrs. Johnstone indicated her pleasurs at being present and speke of cards available. Speaking easily and informally Mr, Kilpat- rick outlined the work of the organization, at one point mentioning that cancer is not a new disease, traces having been discovered | in early Egyptian mummies. However, it is | only during the last three decades that re- | search has expanded to the point now reached. It is through the concerted educational pro- _gram being followed so energetically by the Society, making the public aware of the 'disease, that the increasing necessity for more and more research become apparent. The Society has been in existence for twenty- seven years. Approximately one third of the funds raised in annual cancer campaigns are used in research.
