FIGURE SKATING CLUB ELECT NEW OFFICERS A Public meeting of the Terrace Bay Figure Skating Club was held Friday evening April 27th in the Recreation Centre, With the retiring President, Mrs. R. Skinner presiding over the meeting, a report of the year's activities was given by Secretary Mrs, H..G. Hall, The report read as follows: "Nine executive meetings were held dur- ing the season, as well as various committee meetings in preparation for the Ice Frolics, With Mrs, Pattison as Club Pro, there were 21 weeks of figure skating with lessons Tuesday and Thursday and a skating session Saturdays. There were 127 members at the beginning of the season and approximately 110 at the | close of the skating activities, In January, Mrs, Betty Pineault resigned because of illness and was replaced as Secretary-Treasurer by Mrs. Harold Hail, who was listed second on the voting list at the public meeting, Mrs, Pattison generously attended and guided all executive meetings, es well as special meetings in preparation for the ice show, She also gave her time and talents for the Saturday sessions free of charge. The. skaters had adult supervision under the able convenorship of Mrs, L, Phillips, and the Hudson's Bay Company loaned bunting to act as dividers for the ice patches, which was very successful in preventing accidents, Mrs, Pattison conducted tests throughout the season and skaters were awarded ribbons. On March 27th there were 21 entries for skating competitions judged by Mrs, Bouchard and Mir, Fraser, On April lst Miss Gail Wood passed her preliminary skating test in Port Arthur, It is hoped that our Club will be able to join the Canadian Figure Skating Association, This would enable us to import judges and have our skaters try the skating tests, Plans for Ice Frolics of 1956 got mder- way early in January and many weeks of in- tensive practice by lirs, Pattison and her pupils followed, An afternoon and evening performance was presented in our local arena on March 24th and proved a huge success in spite of so much illmess among the skaters - 15 skaters who were unable to perform the night of the Ice Frolics were remembered with "Get Well" cards, The mothers deserve credit for their wonderful co-operation in making the costumes and assisting with the show. The Kiwanis Club provided props and s lighting with the assistance of Mr. J, (Cont. en next col,) Page 8 FIGURE SKATING 3LUB (Cont. ) Cumming, who also made the beautiful posters. MC'ing was ably handled by Ken Weppler, Mrs. J. Duncan faithfully supervised the music for ail carnival practices and Mrs, Bouchard played the music for the show, The Recreation Committee co-operated fully with our club throughout the season. For this season only there was no charge for Arena Rental for the Ice Frolics and in view of the fact that there is an ers cellent bank balance it was requested that the present low rate for members be main- tained, The rates are $1.00 membership fee and 50¢ lesson fee, Five talented skaters from Port Arthur Figure Skating Club were an added attraction to the Ice Frolics of 1956 and it is felt that our skaters were greatly encouraged : by their appearance, Dr. and Mrs, McCausland generously donated their home to entertain the Lake- head skaters, executive and husbands following the Ice Show, Mrs. Pattison and the executive provided refreshments, A costume wardrobe has been started and at present 110 costumes have been turned ing On April 7th our skaters presented several numbers from our Ice Show at the annual Kiwanis Kiddies Carnival, To close the season the skaters were entertained at a party in the Community Church basement April 21st, A film of our Ice Frolics of 1956 was shown and re- freshments served, tur, Jim Fraser, Recreation Director, conducted the election of officers for the 1956-57 season, with the following results: President ~ Mrs, L.
