Volume 5, Noo 49 BILL SCOTT WILL RETIRE ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER On Friday, December 9th another milestone will be reached by Bill Scott who will retire from the employ of the LongLac Pulp and Paper Company after almost ten years service with the Company. Bill Scott first became associated with the Company in September 1945 when he worked with Stadler and Herter, Consulting Engineers. Bill helped in the surveying of the Lake Superior shoreline, taking soundings of the lake, and clearing bush for the mill site and the fire break, Bill first went on the LongLac payroll in July, 1946, On March 21, 1950 he was put in charge of the Tool Crib, the job he held at the time of his retirement, Schreiber, Ontario was Bill's birthplace, His father came from Scotland and started to work for the C.P.R. In 1894 his father opened the Scott Bakery in Schreiber, Scott's bread was good old fashioned bead and was in demand from White River to the Lakehead, Bill himself made this special Scott's bread from 1916 to 1946. In his younger years he was quite a guide, trapper, hockey player et al. Bill recalls his canoe trips up through the San Toy lakes to Big Trout, Steele Lake, McKay Lake to the Hudson Bay post at LongLac. The return trip being made via LongLac and the Black River, These trips being made prior to the Canadian National Railways existence. Bill feels certain that his party was the first to take a canvass canoe in this country. He can recall buying a new birch-bark canoe from the Indians at a dollar a foot for a fourteen footer}! Bill played on left wing in his hockey days and the highlight of his career was when Schreiber team won the Thunder Bay Senior Hockey Championship in 1913-14. This will be the first real test of the season for the locals, who have been practising regularly for the past while, and fans are assured of a good contest between two evenly matched teams, Marathon have always floored a strong squad but this year with several new faces in the Terrace Bay lineup, the locals will be out to prove that they can well challenge the best that Marathon can offer. A small admission charge of 25¢ for adults and 10¢ for children will be charged at the door.
