Falls are a close second to traffic as a cause of accidental injury and death; workers should be made aware of the many little things that lead to these serious acci- dents. Here are some of the most prolific causes of falls: 1. People failing to look' where they are going, &. Hurrying or slipping on uneven surfaces, stairs or ramps. 3, Us- ing bulky objects which obstruct the view. 4. Using makeshift supports, such as boxes, barrels or chairs. 5. Running down stairs or failing to use hand-rails of stairs. 6, Fail- ing to use both hands when gripping ladder rungs when climbing up or down ladders, 7. Failing to use Safety Belts and adequate safeguards. 8. Failing to recognize that good housekeeping is essential to both efficiency and safety, and that hazards include slippery floors, obstructions in aisles and loose flooring; 9. Wearing of badly worn or high heeled shoes, 10, Daydreaming. 113 Defective surfaces or equipment, Since falls can be ented only by unsafe physical conditions or unsafe acts, Su- pervisors are asked to see that these causes are given attention if accident records are to be decreased. Accident records will fall when falling accidents are controlled, 0-0-0 SAFETY CONTEST STANDINGS TO OCTOBER 26, 1949.
