Wharani.es Defeat Comets to Win League Title _. _Last--Thursday night-before-a trowd nearing the 500 mark, Whammies defeated Comets by an 8=7 margin in a hard fought game to win the league title in the six team men's league for the 1948 season. The victory gave Whammies a single point margin over Hydro in the final standings. Laroque, pitching for Whammies, struck out six without giving up a single base on balls in the seven inning game. Whitfield did the mound chores for Comets until the first of the fifth when George Davis took over. Down 8-5:going into the last half of the seventh Comets staged a two run rally and had the winning run on second when Chopty went to bat as a pinch hitter but Laroque struck him out to win his own ball game, Comets, however, had outhit Wihammies 13 hits to 9. Semi-Finals Now Underway Last Monday evening at both Hydro and Terrace Bay fields, games were played in the semi-finals. At Hydro in the first game of a two out of three series, the Hydro boys took Comets into camp with an 10-7 victory. On the Terrace Bay sandlot in the last half of the seventh, Whammies scored with one man out to break a tie game with Klubbers and win 7-6. Tuesday evening at Terrace Bay, Comets edged Hydro 6=5 to even the series andforce a third game. Future Playoff Games At the moment, it is impossible to schedule specific games between teems, but games in the semi-finals and finals will be played Thursday, September 2nd, Friday, September 3rd, Tuesday, September 7th and Wednesday, September 8th with additional games if necessary.
