3 May 20, 1948 LARGEST CIRCULATION IN TERRACE BAY Vol. 3 No. 20 PART-TIME PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION TO BE SPONSORED BY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Townsite children have been having a field day ; recently around the new playground equipment which is being set up in the north cast corner of the park bounded by Laurier and Selkirk Avenues. Some youngsters have been so excited that they could hardly finish meals before rushing back to the area to play, while others have just about forgotten to go to school in their enthusiasm, At e meeting of the Terrace Bay Women's Institute held on Monday evening May 17th at the home of the president Mrs. R. A. Frick, the question of playground supervision was discussed and the ladies agreed to offer their services for a two hour period from 2:30 to 4:50 p.m. five days a week Monday through Friday. In case of rain, of course, no super- vision would be supplied. Supervision will commence on Monday, May 24th, with the following ladies assisting during.the first week: : Monday - May 24 - Mrs. Monty Paget and Mrs. F. Soughton Tuesday - May 25 - Mrs. W. Rudolf and Mrs. A. Greenfield Wednesday - May 26 - Mrs. W. Lowe and Mrs. J. Isbester Thursday - May 27 - Mrs. J. Wig and Mrs. R. Hupp Friday - May 28 - Mrs. D. McDonald and Mrs. V. Hanson Those assisting are not necessarily members of the Women's Institute end any other ladies who would like to volunteer their services are asked to contact Mrs. R. Frick at 112 Laurier Avenue or Mrs. F..Soughton, 67 Laurier Avenue. The generous offer of the Women's Institute to sponsor playground supervision is most welcome and we feel sure that it will be sincerely appreciated by parents and children alike, The spirit which prompted such cooperative action is a tribute to this new community of Terrace Bay. 0.05 0 FOUR FIRES DURING PAST WEEK During the past week in the Improvement District of Terrace Bay, which extends from Jackfish Bay on the east to the outskirts of Schreiber on the west, we have had four fires. Three of the fires occurred on May 13th, one at Hydro.....a small grass fire near the burning ground of the garbage dump east of the Lower Camp.....and a bush fire near Jackfish Bay which was handled by the Department of Lends and Forests, Eight men from the Terrace Bay project were flown in from Intake Bay to fight the Jackfish Bay fire. On the 14th it was necessary to put out a grass fire behind bunkhouse 108 at the Millsite. Once again we have been fortunate thdt by prompt action the fires have quickly been brought under control, but we should constantly bear in mind that it might have been other- wise. Someone remarked the other day that since this project has developed to its present state, it is very hard to realize that, at all times, an extreme fire hazard exists. For example: it is such an easy matter to enter a wooded area still smoking a cigarette. Since this is true, Fire Chief George Maitland has placed dozens of signs at strategic spots throughout the district to caution us about smoking. All such signs, of course, should be obeyed. But signs alone are not enought We should all try, at all times, to gucrd against carelessness with anything that might start a fire. It's a case of being constantly on the alert and ever mindful of the devastation which can be wrought by fares. COU0 IT'S MUCH BETTER TO PREVENT FIRES THAN TO HAVE TO FIGHT THEM
