Chronicle-Journal spoke with four seniors ; Dawson Court Home for the Aged ; recalls 2 1/2 pounds of bread cost a nickel ; gunny sack of turnips and cabbages sold for 90 cents ; automobile for less than 1,000 ; were those truly the good old days ; Ella Sutherland, 88 ; schoolteacher ; riding street car cost 25 cents for eight tickets ; food prices low ; Harry Newton, 75 ; was captain of Great Western salvage barge ; earned $40 a month ; Daisy Hurrell, 83 ; emigrated to Canada from Britain ; secured position as nurse for family for $30 a month ; purchased all their homes in cash ; husband secured position in hardware at Eaton's ; Joseph King, 86 ; worked fishing boats for 50 years ; lived in lighthouse ; moved to Rossport ; bag of cooking onions 90 cents ; 100 pounds of salt pork for 9 cents a pound ; photo
